Is it still possible to start a good wiki yet?

I am thinking about setting up a wiki website for a certain scientific field. I am not sure if it is too late to start such a project?
I mean why would you contribute to my wiki instead of wikipedia?

I also would like to couple the wiki with a forum to build up a community around that topic.

This is planned as a long term project, but i am not sure if it is a good idea ?

No opinions on that? I mean is there even a point in making a wiki with a scientific topic?

depends on the subject mate.... is it possible to start a good wiki on... lets say Dr. Who just because i'm a fan... well no... there's already a good one on that... is it possible to start a good wiki on idk... just off the top of my head... paper bags.... probably... didnt see one (wasn't searching for one either)

imo if you want to start a wiki you need a fresh subject .... for instance you could start a wiki on hybrid cars... it's a relatively new subject and ppl are searching for it
