Is it still possible to make a successful website?

Hi BHW!

I'm just looking for some general advice/suggestions on websites and SEO.

I have a strong programming background and knowledge of a lot of tech subjects. I've made a lot of websites in the past, usually using Wordpress or something of that nature. I never end up being able to get a lot of traffic to the websites anyways. Just the occasional view(which are probably spiders). Although, I've never actually spent a dime on SEO. But it feels like it would be helpless anyways. I've usually focused heavily on the onpage SEO and submitting the website to all the different search engines and stuff. But no backlinks. I never really could get into that because it seems like most of the internet is no-follow. Always had 0 page rank.

Starting out a new website, is it still possible to be successful? Like say... a blog with under 50 posts (but still accumulating slowly).

It just feels like websites are already so competitive. Like whatever I post, I'm sure the same information can be found elsewhere online. We can find anything about everything online.

I seen someone else here on BHW posting about a new website and to generate traffic they would just have to do some manual work and pass along some work to others on fiverr and then they would be generating a handful of traffic consistently. Is that really possible?

I also don't understand how I would find out what would be the best keywords to focus on. Like the title of a post I'm sure I would probably make it something that nobody would ever search. I would see it was indexed by going site;mydomain-corn, but then wouldn't be able to find it searching by various different keyword phrases.

But anyways, I plan on blogging about all sorts of techy nerdy type stuff... and the posts would be uniquely written, but similar information could be found elsewhere online too. It's odd though.. it seems I can post the same ol nerdy techy as videos on Youtube and they generate a lot of traffic. It's like SEO is easier on Youtube :|

Yes I sound lame haha any advice is appreciated.

It's probably because people find videos more appealing, and the style of presentation usually matters more than the actual (often rehashed) content. I'd say it's possible to make a successful blog if you can provide a unique view on the subject.

Your goal should be to find and research the best content in your niche and create something better.

Well, basically it's not 2005 anymore. As you say everything can be found online.

However, this should not bugs you at all. You can bring in the same information and even more. However, the main point is how are you going to market your website, how you gonna get traffic, etc... not how unique you can be.

No, you can't pass some $5 to people in fiverr and count on them to bring you traffic, it won't happen.

You have a lot of very basic questions unanswered. I recommend you to start reading the forums and find your answers. They are all here in BHW. Basically this is how I learn 90% of all I know about IM.

Regarding the question "Is that even/still possible?" - Yes it is, but it ain't easy.

The competition makes it more profitable, it's still possible but you need to work harder. Increased competition is good for the consumer, there wont be anymore pages with one keyword and a bunch of random words.

good keywords unique content and right seo direction is what you need

I'll see what I can do. Although I have a lot of learning to do to even figure out how to "research" the best content for my niche

I believe that I am fine with the content part of it. Although maybe just needing a lot more content. But I think you're right about the traffic part. I remember listening to some SEO videos from Youtube and they make it sound like as long as you have good unique content on your website then your site will generate traffic. But I don't think that's true unless you dip into a very uncompetetive search. I've learned a lot on this website so far and will try reading around more. It's just hard because there's no place to start out. Like I could be reading a post and it's getting into tier 1/2/3 sites for SEO and I haven't even heard of that.

Really? No!! Ok.. I sense maybe there's a bit of sarcasm there haha I know it's silly and lame of me to ask. I know there will always be new websites out there. But it just doesn't seem very easy starting out considering nobody knows the site exists, and the keyword phrases are impossible to find on Google (unless it's so unique that nobody even searches it in the first place).

Well there's a big difference between building a website and marketing and generating traffic. A lot of the businesses I deal with are also brick and mortar, and/or want to sell their goods online too.

I guess I should have specified this post more towards blogging and similar type websites. With programming I can build about anything from scratch for a website, but I suck at marketing. Although, I learned a few good things today about keyword research.

Building successful websites is still possible. The problem faced by most people is that they expect good results overnight, and when those things are not forthcoming, they dump the website building for another idea. They then end up with a lot of uncompleted projects, with none of them making no money. In some cases, it takes a website about 2 years of consistent content creation to start ranking and generating good income for the owner.
