Is It Realistically Possible To Beat Authority Sites?

Hello, I have finally decided to start taking action and try out SEO. While I have been gathering my keywords, I have noticed that in my niche almost all the keywords searched in Google will come up with a page of Authority sites. They aren't necessarily ranking that keyword, but still could their sheer number of content give them more love from google? Is it worth it for me to even attempt ranking against these authority sites?

It really depends on what the other content on the authority site is. If it's the same exact niche and content you are building a site about, it's possible but will take a very long time. If it's just one of their inner pages that has little relevance to all of their other content, then it's extremely possible to outrank them.

I myself thought it was impossible to beat some of the authority sites in my niche, but over a year later and over 500+ quality articles posted, I am the authority in my niche at the moment.
 
Check the keyword density.. But if you noticed that the websites which are ranking on this keyword has DA upward of 50 plus, please leave it alone.

But am not discouraging you. If you have to money to buy services that are worth it, then go ahead! it's recommendable!

Thanks for the help! What I'll probably end up doing is keeping this site on the back burner and slowly build it up for gains in the future.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! A newbie like me didn't even think of checking the DA :p. The entire first page for the keyword I was planning on targeting is filled with DA of ~95. I do have an exact match domain, would that provide any noticeable boost in rankings if I did try for this? If not, I'll quit trying to target the site with search engine traffic and instead go for youtube traffic.

I have a competitor that has an authority site in my niche and it was ranking pretty well, even with months of no new updates. Decided to inspect that site and once I've figured out what he did, I assimilated it. After 6 months, with additional KW research and planning plus a great structure, my site (6 months old) has been outranking the competitor (3 year-old site) in the SERPs.
 
As someone new to SEO it will be extremely hard. Even some of the best can't pass authority.
 
And it takes time. Lots of time. And a ton of fresh consistent content usually. And of course links and traffic. If you can commit to getting all that then you can.
 
Its possible but you are going to need a lot of time and resources.

This! :clap2: The very idea to think about competing against one of the big guns is inspiring enough. But it will take some doing and consistency. No reason why you cant.
 
One trick is to rank for the keywords that the authority websites don't bother with. For example, if an "authority website" ranked on the first page for 100 keywords that received 5,000 searches each month (with all of this being a huge understatement) but they ignored 10,000 keywords that received only 100 searches each month, you could rank your website for those keywords to build up your own authority website and then try to rank for the highly competitive keywords later. Of course, this is all easier said than done and requires excellent keyword research skills as well as a huge investment of time and occasionally money.

^^ Exactly.
If the page is full of authority sites when you are looking up your keywords, you have picked the wrong keywords, but not neccisarily the wrong niche!

Start researching each of your chosen keywords in more detail and look for longtails or just slightly lower volume keywords that have less authority sites on page 1.
 
I have beat lots of high authority website in ranking most of the time. They never do seo for their pages they mostly rank because of their authority. OP trying is the only way to get answers to your all questions.
 
If you're talking about taking on an authority site the size of askmen or something then let me
tell it to you straight up. It does not matter how good or bad you are at SEO nor does it matter
what keywords you are choosing.

Here is what matters...

1) Hire a team of Native English writers to churn out tons of content daily.
2) Have a massive budget and deep pockets.
3) Media exposure and serious all around syndication + Press releases to major news sites.

Add a pinch of swag in that mix and you might have something. Or you could just choose another
niche or keywords to target. ;)

PS: Buying a premium domain that's aged 5 years or more then transferring it to your registrar would
definitely help you out a bit.
 
Built good content on another authority site (wordpress, tumblr, blog.com, etc.) and use it as a link filter to your own money site.

With my 6-month old, only-7-backlinks-to-the-home-page site outranking the competitor (3-year old site with lots of d0-foll0w backlinks) in many longtail and main keywords, yeah, I would say that it was a successful assimilation. Although I think it was the lack of updates that was holding the competitor back.

Of course you can outrank authority sites. Most authority sites got to their position on the virtue of quality links. As a matter of fact, if you examine some keywords the authority sites are ranking for you, will realize that there isn't much relevant links or SEO done for them, it's just Google's authority love. The secret is to make your site an authority, time, expertise and a sound budget is all you need. It's smart to classify your keywords into two groups, the short and long term. Focus more on the short term keywords, rank and start making some money then plough back into SEO for the long term.
