I Have A 2Gb Monthly Usage Plan Which Costs $35/Month.
i can't get a better plan cause

a: i live in au and plans are so fucking expensive.
b: i live in a place in au where there are no dsl plans or cable plans (the country) i am forced to use 3g connection.

i was wondering is it possible to use a vps as an my main internet connection and use it to browse the internet like my 3g connection
i would use my 3g connection to connect to the vps.

if so i have a couple of questions

when i browse thru the vps is bandwith taken from the vps or my actual internet connection?

and would the speed of the vps be the same as my actual internet connection?

Thank BHW for any help :)

Well actual bandwidth will be taken from both VPS and your regular 3G connection. 3G is going to become a medium to access VPS and you'll only be charged normal surfing data, actual bandwidth is going to be consumed from the VPS. Say if download 1 GB file in the VPS then bandwidth consumed will be counted as VPS bandwidth not the 3G one. You can always check how much bandwidth is being used in the task bar tray icon.
I hope it makes everything clear :)

It will work for browsing and using SEO tools. But you cant watch videos. If you want to download files t your main computer, it will consume your bandwidth and will be slow.

What if I do what I already do anyway because of bandwith and use Orbit downloader to download youtube videos? VPS or my isp being used? I ask because Orbit downloads if I only get the first 5 seconds of the youtube video and stop it.

Think of it as a whole other computer, with a whole other internet connection. Things you do on your VPS will eat your VPS bandwidth.

You will be using the VPS internet connection, which will be much faster then what you have now.

However like rippa said, it's not what you want use if your going to be watching videos.Your using your internet connection to connect and view the VPS, so it can look a bit slugish when moving around the VPS, and much more so on videos.

Thanks For Your Answers Guys

Q= If I Download A Movie From The VPS, Would I Be Able To Watch It On The VPS?

Okay

How About This
If I Was To Transfer The Movie to My Actual Computer, Would The Bandwith Be Taken From The VPS or Actual Internet Connection?

Sorry For The Stupid Questions, I Am Kind Of New To All Of This?

Hey dude,

Get a vps at Jumba.com It's like $10 a month for a 512mb one and its in Sydney. Pick ubunutu for your choice of linux.

Then go to freelancer.com and get someone to set you up vnc + gui. This will mean you can log into it and use it like a normal computer. It will probably be pretty laggy since your on 3g, but it will load the net much faster.

And if you transfer movies, both the vps and your 3g connection bandwidth will be used.

So is this really possible? I'm also thinking of trying this idea out since it will be cheaper I think and I don't have a really quick connection only 3G and 3.5G. OP, did you pursue this? How did it go? Thanks!

Possible in what sense? To run VPS over 3G? Yeah, sure - but what's the point, when you're most likely going to be transferring all the VPS downloaded stuff to your computer, thus using your 3G connection. Unless you keep all your doings on your VPS (which again makes no sense with the lagginess due to 3G), it won't save you any money - vice versa actually.

Move to a better place with better internet connection IMO.

You can use the vps to download movies and then host a website to stream the movies back to your 3G connection. With current technology, html5/remote desktop will not be fast enough for you to use the server as your main computer, also due to the fact that the server will not have grahpics card/drivers. you will be limited in the uses of utilizing your VPS connection but you can still use it for certain tasks. If i need to transfer a big file to my VPS I will use another VPS to download/upload the files as the connection is much faster.

The only way it's not gonna consume your own ISP's bandwidth is if you can ask the VPS guys to copy the movie or whatever you download on the VPS on to a flash drive and send it to you by post.

:P
