Is it possible to decrease the ranking of a particular search result? Or does it just need to be buried alive?

There is one particular search result populating when customers do a search for my business, and even though it is completely unrelated, I'm pretty confident that it is costing me sales. Contacting the site owner and having it removed / modified is not an option. What's my move?

completely unrelated means you should not bother about modifying or deleting other's sites.

You have to concentrate on your site only. You have to get backlinks to your page.

Give it time the SERP will shift. Get some clicks to your page you will move up.

Te best option is always to bury alive, if you "try" to decrease the ranking you can risk to power up more the page

No need to worry about it if it is completely irrelevant. After a certain time, there will be changes in the result.

If it costs you sales and you have the budget, buy it. Don't try to spam it with negative seo, as it can increase its rankings even more.

i think u are looking for online reputation management, you can do it on your own by creating some profiles with the business name as profile name. create twitter, linkedin, etc etc, that would help to rank high and move down your competitor 1 to below or even further pages

Find all of the existing pages that are ranking anywhere for the same keyword - think social media pages, directories and so on. Then fire some links at those pages and also optimize their content where possible and you'll soon be able to push that particular page down in the search results.

As far as devaluing the page itself a) its not something that is up for discussion on this forum (negative SEO) and b) as others have said, it is possible that it would have the opposite effect to which you intend anyway.
