Is it official yet? Article directory links are worthless

I have a big site which allows me to test alot of different SEO methods to rank inner pages. Seems like throwing 20 to 30 article directory links does nothing to affect the serps now. A very similiar page gets 30 in-content links from a private blog network and I'm seeing serious movement.

Seems to me like the big directories like articesbase, upublish, amazines, etc. are worthless in terms of SEO. The popularity of private link networks are rising as links from there actually do work. My concern with these networks is that they can easily be de-indexed/de-valued by Google as it would take a manual reviewer only a few minutes to figure it out. Looks like a few big networks have gone down recently.

What have your experiences been?

I say no, I've recently done article links for the first time in a long time, $6 service, and got a ton of movement. These are the only links I have for some of the sites. One went from 20 to 5 on 4,400 exacts per month. Another went from 10 to 6 on 90k searches per month. Some didn't move, but most did. I ordered 10 more after my first order. And am going to do about 20 more on other sites and inner pages.

Very wrong, I can still do some serious damage with article links. And 20-30 articles isn't a lot - how many were even indexed? I know they devalued the article directories themselves but getting backlinks from them still works.
 
Wrong. Tons of people said the same thing about profile backlinks, blog comments, etc. I'm yet to hear people say this with social bookmarks and web 2.0s but I'm sure it will come up.

I've done JUST article submissions on a site and it was boosted noticeably in SERPs.
 
serp movements, hmmm it may move for one and it might not move for the other. article directory might work for someone who is trying to rank for low competition. but if you are talking abt mid-high competition and you say, article directories work for your serps, then i will be surprised. also private blog networks are great. but, my advice don't join private networks that are extremely popular. because thousands of links and articles are posted on each blog everyday. and these kind of numbers of posts will definitely get google spiders thinking of the site's credibility. and some morons will just use dupe contents throughtout. which makes it some sought of a footprint for those big networks to be spotted. create your own network if you can or join a small trustable manual network owned by small players.
 
Completely worthless to the wrong person.
 
Well, after the Panda update many big article directories start falling down

To overcome the Panda effect, now these directories are turning nofollow. I guess, this is why you aren't noticing big results in your test.
 
I get that they may not be good for SEO anymore, but they are still a GREAT source of traffic. My new favorite is Street Articles. You can never underestimate the importance of traffic!
 
Would have to disagree with the worthless part of this thread's title, they have some value but only when used correctly.
 
Nope. I'm using article directories to get rankings all the time. Just last week I did a couple of campaigns and saw boosts from article directories. It's all in how you approach it.
 
A link is a link. Sure some count more, some count less, but pretty much all DO count.
