I was just thinking if is it a good practice to 'turn off' your wordpress site while development to avoid google from reaching your page (while there's any content)? if yes, how can I accomplish it in wordpress?

    Use this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/underconstruction/

Turn it on, and set the HTTP Response code to 503.

You could use robots to prevent indexation while you are working on it.

To disable indexing go to wordpress dashboard >> Settings >> Reading and check "Discourage search engines from indexing this site"
Don't forget to uncheck this when you're done with the site

OR you may just edit your .htaccess file so that its only visible for you while you are developing it .
    use the following code :

Edit the ip address to your own.

    Its not NECESSARY but "RECOMMENDED".
And as said by other members, why not just use a plugin for that. Its pretty simple.

It is best to prevent crawlers while your site is under development.

For those of you who say, turn it off or deny during development, would you care to say why? Rather than just, deny etc, it might prove useful to someone rather than most threads turning into a yes no opinion fest.

There are a bunch of easy plugins you can use. Literally search plugins for "coming soon" and choose.
