Reddit has faced issues from the media regarding botting, fake news manipulation (regarding US election, etc.) so those changes make sense. I'm going to assume they will make more changes in the near future, as will all social media platforms, to improve their advertising systems and increase difficulty of free marketing for marketers so they can increase company profits.
With Reddit, remember that a lot of people are still using the old Reddit so some of the changes that just affect the new layout may not don't apply to all Redditors. A lot have complained about the redesign and haven't switched. Old design is live at: old.reddit.com
