While working on a few sites recently, I noticed that internal linking alone can sometimes move rankings, even without building new backlinks.

Many people focus only on publishing more content or getting backlinks, but improving how pages connect inside the site can help search engines understand the topic structure better.

What I usually try to do is link supporting articles to one main page and use natural anchor text instead of forcing exact keywords.

In a couple of cases, after improving internal links, some pages started ranking better.

Just curious about others here, do you plan internal linking when publishing content, or mostly add links later when updating posts?

Yeah I noticed the same thing. Sometimes just fixing internal links can move rankings a bit because Google understands the site structure better. I usually add a few links when publishing, then add more later when updating posts.
 
Want to add to this. Linking architecture is probably the most important overlooked item. I have a website been doing linkbuilding for around 2 years needle did not really move. After we fixed the internal linking architecture correctly we saw incredible ranking gains. This included internal anchor links between pages. It definitely is a huge factor
 
Yeah, that’s a fair point. I guess many experienced SEOs already understand the value of internal linking. I just notice that a lot of site owners still overlook it and focus mostly on backlinks. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

internal linking is way more powerful than most ppl think, especially on sites that already have some authority. if link equity is just sitting on random pages, rankings stall even if the content is decent.
personally i think it should be planned from the start. build small topic clusters where supporting posts push authority to the main page. anchor variety helps too, exact match anchors everywhere looks forced.
i’ve seen pages jump a few positions just by fixing crawl depth and adding contextual internal links. no new backlinks, just better flow of existing authority inside the site.

Internal linking is definitely underrated. It helps search engines understand your site structure and which pages are important.
I usually add some links while publishing content, then update and add more as new posts come in. Linking supporting articles to a main page works really well.
Sometimes even small internal link changes can improve rankings.

From my experience internal linking can definitely move rankings, especially on smaller sites where the structure is still simple. Sometimes just linking a few relevant articles to a main page already makes a difference because it signals which page should carry the main topic.

I also noticed that contextual links inside the content work much better than sidebar or footer links. Google seems to understand the relationship between the pages more clearly.

Usually I add a couple of internal links when publishing the article, and later I go back to older posts and connect them if the topic fits.
 
Internal linking is massively underrated, a proper silo structure has moved rankings for me faster than new backlinks in some cases. Plan it upfront, retrofitting is a pain and you always miss stuff.

A website can rank for longtails under the weight of its own internal linking.

I like a frequency of one link for every 200ish words, where a 1k article will have 5ish internal links. The page I'm linking to will have a cluster of keywords I'm trying to rank the page for, I'll use an exact match anchor of one of those keywords just once and the rest will be semantically related. I keep the bulk of the internal linking between a hub page, silo pages under the same theme of the hub page and other related silos under the same theme (keep your internal linking between your most-related pages).

For example, I might have a page on hunting knives. A silo page under the hub might be on "best blade knife for deer skinning". Another silo page might be small game hunting knives. Another silo page might be knives for taxidermy, and another 7ish pages of similar theme but different enough to warrant their own pages. These pages will all absolutely link back and forth to each other, to not do so is to throw all kinds of potential rankings down the toilet.

But they won't be linking to a different hub with silos that are based on the best backpacks for hiking or hub/silo on tents, etc. Keep your internal linking highly related.

Yes, internal linking helps a lot. If you link another post from a ranked post, you will notice the changes.
