Is Instagram becoming more AI-driven now?

I’ve been noticing a big shift on Instagram lately.

It doesn’t feel like follower count matters the same way anymore. I’ve seen small pages get crazy reach, while bigger pages struggle while their content really hits.

It almost feels like Instagram’s AI is testing every post instantly and deciding:
  • Who to show it to
  • How long to push it
  • Whether it deserves more reach or not
Some things I’ve noticed:
  • Reels either flop or take off fast, not much in between
  • Watch time seems way more important than likes
  • The same content can perform completely different across accounts
It makes me wonder if we’re not “growing accounts” anymore, but just trying to understand how the AI reacts to content.

So the real question is:
Are we still playing a social media game or are we just optimizing for AI behavior now?

Curious how others here are seeing it
what’s been working for you lately?

I noticed the same thing with reels. It’s like they either get 200 views or 200k, nothing in between.

I think you're right. I've uploaded educational content about my book, and despite trying to follow visibility strategies and post regularly, I haven't seen much growth compared to other accounts I follow that are newer and have grown much faster.

yeah, it's clearly more AI/interest-based now than follower-based. Instagram seems to test content in small batches first, then scales based on retention and replays. In my experience, strong hooks + watch time matter way more than likes or page size.

Everybody is going towards AI, why wouldn't they? The problem is that it's very easy to use it wrong and break the decent equilibrium they had so far, we'll see how this evolves.

Yeah its way more ai driven now. Follower count matters less and retention matters more.

Feels like every post gets tested first and the algo decides if it lives.

Its using AI to help provide you content that you seem to engage with. In that case, it is using AI for those things that you are looking into.

Yeah it's more AI driven and interactions from your audience matter more than likes. Basically if there are enough interactions to your reels they get pushed further by the algo. If not though you experience limited reach.

Yeah exactly, it’s less about what you follow and more about how you behave. Even small actions seem to train the feed pretty fast.

Accurate observation. Instagram has basically become a content testing machine, follower count is just a distribution starting point now, not a guarantee of anything.
Watch time and saves are the signals that matter most in my experience. Likes are almost irrelevant. If people watch the full reel and save it, the algorithm pushes it further regardless of account size.
The shift you're describing means the game is now about hitting the right emotional trigger in the first two seconds consistently. That's harder to fake and harder to buy your way into than followers ever were.
