I just started to watch "The Mentalist" and it's a damn good serial.

The guy Jane (main actor) can see if people are lying just by looking in their eyes.

Is this possible ?

If yes, what you suggest ...?

Normally when someone doesn't look straight at you when they answer your question, they are lying. I know this from past experiences/ my mom always knew when i was lying.
 
You should watch Criminal Minds. It explains human reactions pretty thoroughly, which is quite awesome.

But then again a savvy liar would know this and will look you dead in the eye while lying to you.
 
The non-verbal actions gives out the idea if the person is lying or not. Example. If you asked someone about any issues and then they are not able to look at you face to face, cannot maintain eye contact, sweaty, incoherent answers. boom. they are lying. As for my observation.

You should take a look at the TV series "Lie To Me". It's on netflix, I watched a few episodes and it was pretty interesting at first. Then I got bored.
 
depends on the people that are doing the lying... almoast all tell-tales can be managed :)

after years of practice i can now make someone think i'm lying when i'm actually telling the truth and the other way around :)

it's about thinking what you do and say before you actually do/say it and as with everyting in life... you get better at it with practice

It depends on person to person. For instance, I have a friend who is a professional liar and he has mastered this art after years of practice. Yeah I call it art because not everyone can lie without getting caught. :D. This guy's father has been in police and used to always catch him when he used to lie. His father always slapped for every lie, so over a period of time, he trained his subconscious mind to behave normal even when lying and showing that everything was just normal. He can lie you straight on your face and you'll trust him based on his facial gestures. Professional liars who have been lying can even fool lie detecting machines. It has been proved time and again.
 
Have you ever heard of Derren Brown? He has an excellent way of explaining to us mere mortals how you can read body language / facial expressions to give the illusion of being psychic.

He has also brought out a series of shows where he exposes ghost hunters, mediums, pyschics by showing us how they do it. Its mostly about reading facial expressions and the little signs you give away without even realising. Its a real skill. I love Derren Brown and I love the Mentalist for the very same reason.
 
I know this is old but Lie To Me is where it's at.
 
Yeah there's definitely ways to tell if people are lying. But do they work on everyone and in every situation? I doubt it.
