Is Google valuing user engagement over backlinks more than before?

Lately, it feels like metrics such as time on page, scroll depth, and click patterns are gaining more influence. Sites with strong user interaction seem to hold positions longer, while traditional backlink-heavy pages aren’t climbing as fast. Are we seeing a real shift in how Google measures authority, or is this just a temporary trend?
Yeah Google right now prioritises more user engagement than backlink related sites. Backlinks are needed to climb the ranks but if your users don't engage then you have a dead website in the sight of Google. The ideal is a mix of both.

Is not anymore about the backlinks just get a ton of low quality backlinks and you can rank..... today more than ever you need to focus on content that peoples find valuable and will like to stay on your site to read .... so is about user experience that google count more like how engaged is your audience. The backlinks especially if have real traffic can get a ton of seo signals

Google still needs backlinks to trust a site, but engagement helps decide who deserves to stay on top. Pages with good links but poor user signals often stall, while useful pages with decent engagement hold rankings longer.

So today: links open the door, user signals keep it open.

It does feel like user satisfaction matters more now. pages that truly answer intent and keep users engaged tend to hold rankings better. backlinks still help with authority, but they can’t push weak content like before. It’s not a trend it’s more about balancing authority with real user value now.

Backlinks are still a core ranking factor but Google is clearly prioritizing user satisfaction signals more than before. If users engage, stay longer, and don’t bounce back to search results, rankings tend to stick. It’s not engagement vs backlinks it’s authority + intent satisfaction working together.

Hey Ben Arthur,
Google is definitely tracking post click behavior like bounce rates and scroll depth much closer now to measure intent satisfaction :suspicious:
However, high quality backlinks are still the primary engine required to get your site onto the first page initially.
It operates as a hybrid system today where links build your baseline authority and strong user engagement validates it to keep you there

I think the wording is a bit misleading, because engagement signals don't replace backlinks; they filter them. Backlinks can increase a page's visibility, but if it doesn't align with user intent, engagement data quickly reveals this mismatch. What's changed over the past couple of years isn't that links have become less important, but rather that weak target queries are being identified more quickly. Therefore, in my opinion, links still build authority, and user signals confirm positioning. And when both factors are structurally aligned, search rankings tend to stabilize rather than fluctuate.

Interesting points, everyone. Seems like user signals are becoming a bigger part of the puzzle. Curious to see whether this trend continues to grow or if Google shifts focus again soon.

Hello Ben Arthur, this is a real shift. Google weighs engagement and user experience heavily now to measure true authority. Quality links matter, but amazing user interaction often outranks backlink heavy pages with poor engagement

Exactly, that’s what I’m noticing too. Engagement is clearly becoming a stronger signal, and pages that keep users hooked are getting the real boost. Links still matter, but they’re not the whole story anymore.

engagement matters more now for newer sites.
backlinks still count but weak content with lots of links wont hold.

Hey Ben Arthur, recent algorithm updates have clearly shown a shift towards rewarding active user engagement metrics over raw link volume.Google relies heavily on browser data to measure dwell time and bounce rates to determine if search intent was truly satisfied.Backlinks remain essential for initial indexing and authority but genuine user interaction is what secures top positions in the long run.

Yeah, it's a real shift. Google wants to keep users happy, so pages people actually engage with get the edge. Backlinks build authority, but engagement keeps you there.

No. Similarly to the ridiculous idea that "content is king" , Google are not, and never will, give stronger correlation to user engagement over backlinks. Content and engagement are factors, but never have nor will, have attributed weight anywhere close to backlinks. It's this way by design.

Google are constantly valuing and devaluing link types in response to abuse of said link (Think of how powerful profile links via Xrumer were in the mid naughties '00 '09. They got devalued as a result of widespread abuse, and are now pretty much useless).

Content was never king, otherwise you'd have seen sites with zero backlinks ranking above aged & heavily linked domains - this never happens.

On-site engagement will never move the needle more than quality backlinks - because if Google made that the top metric for rankings- all of us here on BHW would use AI/BOTS/VA's to artificially show user engagement on-site.

Bottom line, you still to this day see content ranking on Google which clearly isn't optimal - but the domain has a strong link profile. You will NEVER see it the other way round. You could have the written skills of Shakespeare & ask 1000 of your friends to artificially engage on your site site in even a moderately competitive niche, and you would never rank without backlinks.

Yes, Google is increasing valuing user engagement signals more than before but that does not mean backlinks are dead. Backlinks matter trust and authority signals. Google algorithm's are much better at judging whether user find content useful. The backlinks alone would not keep page at top.So.in competitive SEO increasingly looks like backlinks get to visibility and boost ranking.
