I used to rank well for casino terms back in 2010. Then google changed its algorithm and my sites dropped off the face of the earth, and i quit affiliating.

Now i've started again, but wonder if it's worth all of the effort to get to google position 1, which around 40% of searchers click on, when nowadays you actually show up at number 6 because of the 5 paid ads above you.

Is the volume of traffic from an effective position of 6 worth it?

Any position in page 1 of the serp for your keyword can be a source of income. The better the rank the better the income. I think everyone agree.

For one year, I was stick at rank 3 for a keyword. I spent a lot of effort to reach rank 1. Between rank 3 and rank 1, I go from 300 visits a day to 700 visits a day for my keyword. But I did not double my adsense income. I double it when I change the on page structure, the ads placement...

And when I was stick at rank 3, it was easier to rank a second property (a PBN site) in page 1 (rank 6-7) than reach rank 1 for my main money site. And I earn money with the parasite site.

With experience, I will try first to do a niche domination with 2 or 3 properties in page 1 even if they are all between position 4-10...

I reach position one, not with backlinks (I stopped during 6 months to create them, but simply reaching 7000 natural signals and 100+ real comments on my article).
 
Getting as high up as you can on the organic listings is great, but I think there is a lot more work that goes into it now than there used to be. I have a number 1 spot I am trying to reclaim over this fucking asshole, but then again there are shopping ads as well as 4 paid results on top. The end result is that it gets less traffic overall thanks to all those ads. Anyway, I try to just focus on targeting more and more keywords rather than just try to get 1 number 1 spot. I think it will probably be a lot more volatile now anyway.
 
My guess is it is better to work on our conversation rate. Small traffic with killing sales funnel can be better than position 1 with more traffic but poor strategy.
 
IMO ranking on the first page itself enough

I had one of my Azon sites show an order placed today.
Site's 5 years old, had no seo done on it for 18 months, highest ranked keyword is 64th spot.
No fresh content for 2 years.

Certainly not, the difference in traffic from "somewhere on page 1" to "number 1" is HUGE! Sure, there are ads, but a significant share of user knows they are ads and heads straight to the organic results.

On average I'd say on position 8 for example, you are just making 10% of the money you'd make on #1.
 
No dude, ranking #1 is nothing these days. Now, it's all about ranking above the ads(at least some of us do).
 
Asking if position 1 is worth having is like asking if SEO is dead, now isn't it. Being king is always good in the SERP world.

Of course its worth having. But if you can't have position 1 then the next best thing is a LARGE basket of position 8-20. Personally I subscribe to impressions and volume versus position. I'd rather spend less money and get 1,500 clicks from 100 little keywords than sock it out over one keyword where being position 1 gets you 1,500 clicks. But if my work over time somehow earns me position 1 in a few good keywords that is great too... but it isn't my goal, clicks are my goal. The longtails are where the money is.

Would you mind telling me how please? If nobody clicks on the site at position 20, isn't it the same as being position 100?

totally agreed.
OP, you can check with Keyword explorer, a new feature from ahrefs..
probably, whatever position you have, it still has a good enough of chance to clickd.
 
Ok Guys i was joking there is no f**cking way you can generate sale siting on #20. :(
 
Number #1 position still important to get a large amount of organic traffic from Google.

I think this is the new gold mine - if you can convert in the teens of percent then you can afford to use Adwords - which is what Google want people to do.

Saves messing with SEO, and as pointed out your no.1 position is halfway down the page, under the fold, and for some searches now there's only 5 or 6 natural results on page 1.

Google want you to pay, you want to make money, you need to find a happy balance between the 2 where you get the maximum sales for the minimum Adwords outlay.

Even if you rank no.1 you'll still make shitloads more money if you're using Adwords as well.
 
All website owners goal is reaching that position.
 
Everyone try to keep their website in that position.Number 1# is much more enough.
