Is Google Places Worth It?

I convinced a wedding photographer for Google places promotion. We agreed that he would pay me 500 / month after 30 days but before we could get started, he got a call from the greedy ass Google itself offering 100 dollars of free adwords. He took it and got 5 clients in a month.

Why would he need Google places for 500 a month when he gets 5 customers = $5000 revenue for a little dough with adwords? How can I convince him to still go with me?

Because once he is listed in GP he will never have to pay again to advertise on adwords as long as he is in GP.
 
tell him when people type lets say photographer in New York if he is listed in GP his map will display on google search
nothing will be easier than finding exactly what you are looking for on the map
 
I know what you mean.

I've had potential clients say the same thing...they can get #1 in the adwords box for a lot less than I'm asking for.

Google reallt spoils the SEO game sometimes :(
 
Google Places definitely worth it.
Once listed it's free traffic not like adwords.
I had a client, Gym with 70 locations, we listed them all.
Traffic increase was huge.

He would be paying me 500 a month so its not free for him.

Thanks for the tip but is it worth paying me 500 a month just so he can be seen on the map. This is not even relevant since he goes to meet the bride or groom and at their wedding.
 
Well, the question that the client needs to answer is: "is it profitable". If its profitable to pay you $500/month, then he should do it. It may be more or less profitable than adwords, but as long as its profitable, he should do it.

I have clients that are ranked #1 on Google and who still do adwords. Why? Because both are still profitable, and I recommend that a client do everything that is making money for them. Your potential client may fall into that category. Maybe keep both campaigns running. When/If one of them becomes unprofitable, than that campaign should be dropped.

If the yellowpages are profitable, then why stop doing them to go online? The answer is, do both. Why would you stop doing any form of advertising that is working?

Ok, I guess I made my point... lol.

I think we need to think in terms of not "replacing" everything with online marketing, but showing prospects how online marketing can be profitable to them as well.
 
How do you justify 500 a month for setting up a G places page? Are you planning to blackhat and get his business located in multiple places? Going to open fake PO boxes or something?

I have no idea why anyone would pay monthly for G places.
 
You mean Google used the information from the photographers Google Places listing to send him the $100.00 worth of free ad-words? I guess on the one hand that could be thought of as "poaching", but on the other it's really good for your client.

(I think he's saying he lost 500/mo in other SEO work because he made the mistake of setting up Google Places before he had his client locked into a contract.)

You're the SEO guy. Good things for your clients are good things for you, duh. Your problem is that it took you by surprise and you weren't ready for it. Instead of convincing your client he's better off buying adwords and not hiring you, it should have convinced him that you are an SEO genius and that he's going to get rich if he just keeps you on the payroll. My client handed me the Google Ad-words plastic card thingie as if it were mine, and they were going to let me figure out what to do with it. And I'm going to fill that thing out, and let all that traffic go to my clients (along with everything else I'm sending their way), and they are going to think I'm the Lord God of SEO himself.

In short, you don't have an ad-words problem, you have a perception problem.

He'll get lazy and wont run his adwords campaign correctly... Just wait imo.
 
Why would you be charging $500/month when it is a one time thing service?
Making optimised google places listing is set and forget, you can update it every 6 months or so.

You don't think there is more to it than just optimizing the listing? Hate to break it to you but there is alot more work involved than just getting the listing set up.

GP work can last months and months to get a site listed on the first page for the keywords they want.
 
People trust organic more, but charge by the click and charge 1/2 of what add words does, and you will still make $$

but some people (our potential customers) don't even know they're paid ads.

It's virtually impossible to SEO a large site in a competitive and profitable niche without dabbling in a bit of adwords. The ROI is nowhere near organic search for me - but it's all part of the big picture.

Tell him that Google Places is trusted more by people more than a "paid" Google advertisement.
 
call his competitor up and make a sales pitch- theres always a competitor that wants an edge-
 
I sign up for google engage and get 20 vouchers every time I finish them I get 20 more, I include that in a package for google places (maps) when they purchase my services, they still need some one that knows how to get the best advantage of the service (not every one knows the best way to optimize addwords) so instead of worring about that service make you self an expert and cash in for both services ;) and cash in.
got to remember that business owners are good at being business owners you job is to show them that you are the expert a google places google addwords and they need your services...master that and laugh all the way to the bank. :D
