I think he was referring to the number of searches per month rather than the competition. Only Google themselves know that.

I guess the word "accurate" is more like "guiding". Google doesn't release any real exact information, but rather averages of monthly statistics. So yes, that number is something to expect, but as for your other question(s):

14k ain't a whole lot, and especially if the AdSense competition is low (= low AdSense income) or if there's not some other easily monetizable solution, then there's not much reason to go for it when you can just as well choose niche with better payouts and much more traffic.

And as EMD is not what it used to be, then many might deem the search term not that fitting as domain name, and go for something different, while optimizing sites for the term (albeit apparently not the case here, but overall).

    Do what I do...

    1) First check in GKT, of course never with broad match.

    2) Then check with Bing's keyword tool! Bing is more accurate than GKT, how do i know? I tested it with ppc!

Anyway, now once you have the data from Bing, multiply it by about +25-35% and Bamm, you have the exact searches in google for that keyword!

I have been very accurate with this method of combining these 2 tools, and yes, an excel sheet realllly helps! :)
