Is 'Google Instant' a SEO killer?

With Google's launch of 'Instant' already successful, what kind of implications will this have on web marketers? What are your thoughts?
My initial thoughts are that our already poor customer has few more 'buckets of phrases' to target for.

Every time I search for something I see different results for the same keywords. I also noticed that when I enter a part of a keyword usually only the biggest authority sites show up. The small niche targeted websites are dissapearing. I don't know what will happen in the long term but so far I don't like it.
 
It sure seems scary to begin with. I wonder if Google suggest and the wonder wheel have anything in common. I would like to better understand how Google is pulling up the suggestions for the keywords.

While what you say is true in many sense, I also noticed that some of the 2 words and 3 words Keyphrases might lose traffic to long tails. For e.g. when I enter "green tea benefits" I see some interesting suggestions such as " green tea benefits weight loss". So a lot of traffic would get shoved into those suggestions which otherwise end up with the results on "green tea benefits".

It is also true that Google suggest has been around before Instant came along, but I still think it does impact the 2 and 3 word phrases also in many ways with the preview of the results page now readily available without having to hit on return/enter.

Since the launch of this thing, my R & D people have been working on a project that I setup to test it and due to it pulling random results each time a keyword is mentioned, probably due to the connection and search being made by random recon spider bots in their system, I don't see this going to the top of the list for damaging anyone's seo efforts nor replacing any standard search engine search formats.

The second glitch is in the way it pulls random/different results due to the database updates, different spiders recalling different database file areas first, as well as possibly due to the spider's own algorythm being different.

Long tail keywords work in this search tool as well, the thing is that it does the same thing for them as it does fo shorter primary words. The results are too dense on the primaries and too thin in the extreme long tails. This is simply another tool for instant, short, primary keyword search results that are the latest, most updated postings to the system but will doubtfully help anyone for ranking in the standard catalog keyword search.

I recommend using this to search for your own new links, to confirm that they are in google's system and not so much for standard seo ranking.
 
You know what annoys / worries me, google does the search for words as you type them, what if the first fragment of a word you type is something that is obscene / illegal/ could get you fired?

This is google trying to think for you.

I think it's bad because I remember when people were bitching kids didn't know how to do research any more they just googled everything. Soon they might not even know how to look something up on the internet since it searches on your behalf. just start typing and google will read your mind and feed your what they think is best.

A little far out I know but it's something to think about.
 
Unfortunately, when they release Internet 2.0 (which the regulators of the internet are planning to do due to pressure from global banks, corporations, and governments) the internet as we know it will seize to exit.

Fortune 500 companies will be dominating all the places and positions in the search engines within the next 3-5 years.

So make the money now, save most of it, and get into other businesses, since it's not good to have all your eggs in one basket.
 
What is bad is when Google starts to charge Advertisers for positioning within their instant search options. It's an advertising platform where the revenue won't be shared with site owners.

A good time for a company or a group of blackhatters to make a alternative engine.

This instant thing is not going to change allot.

If i want a laptop charger i am going to search: cheap dell laptop charger for mini 10. Why? Because i want to narrow the results.

I don't think it really hurts nor helps SEOers, and if there are any effects, I'd think they balance out.

I don't see that happening, as it will have to go to a vote of the people for the government to step in with anything. They can't just post anything without it going to a national vote before accepting it as law or government controlled sanction, at least in the US.
 
I am actually not seeing the instant switch on nor off. Yes, have cleared my cookies.

None of our clients have seen a significant change in their rankings, long chain keywords or otherwise. What I am seeing is random rankings for plural versions of keywords. Example; if I've optimized for "clothing store" and I put "clothing stores" in the search box, sometimes we come up very high and sometimes we are on page 8 or 9. This just started with the implementation of instant.
 
The only guys dying because of instant will be misspellings...

Google Instant is not an SEO killer and does not have any effect on the way sites are ranked. There will never be an SEO killer IMHO until there is either a brand new search engine with a whole different algorithm or something similar IMHO.

The only "problem" that some may face is for long-tailed keywords. Since GI shows results as you type, some people may not make it to your site before typing in the complete long-tailed phrase your page is ranked for.

An easy way to combat that is by grabbing multiple rankings for multiple KWs which is what any serious SEO marketer does anyways.:D

A little off topic, but from my understanding, the plan for the proposed "internet 2.0" is that you will need it to access faster browsing speeds as well as a lot of the popular websites. Which ones still have yet to be determined.

The "old" internet will be made to have a cap on speed as well as daily bandwidth etc which you will have to pay if you go over your limit.

Think of it like your cable tv or cell phone plans etc. Everything will be split up into plans with different prices. Of course, you will get better service etc with a better plan.

Whether or not it will come out is one thing. Whether or not it will work is another.
