I been ranking a bunch of expired domains for a competitive keyword and they all seem to follow the same fate.

They make it to page 2... eventually 1, and then they drop.

At first I was thinking well... this is Google sandboxing these domains or something... then I thought maybe the fact that they are all hosted on CF is triggering some filter?

I will start doing the same now with a proper PBN/SEO host and see if it makes a difference.

Anyone seen this or have some theories?

The issue is not CF related but with something that you are doing the same on all of those domains/websites. Even if google can 'see through' (which is not the case), there isn't a single reason why Google would want to 'punish' your website(s) unless you are going fully BH.
Change your strategy.

Cheers.

you think G is OK ranking 4-5 websites in the top15 all hosted in CF?

More than 7m websites use cloudflare (https://backlinko.com/cloudflare-users). CF has nothing to do with how google see your websites (unless your footprints are too obvious)
(unless your footprints are too obvious) -- this last part is what I was suspecting about. Is there any way I can check that my configuration is properly done?
