Is freelancing really working?

Hey, I’m a web dev with 5 years of experience.
I lost my job recently because of company issues, so I decided to try freelancing.

The problem is, I posted on Fiverr and Upwork, dropped my prices in half just to build some reputation, but still getting zero clients.

I see a lot of people saying freelancing works for them. How? How do they even get their first few clients?

Any honest advice would help a lot.
it would help you to get some experience and a lot of people make a lot of money through it but in the end it is good to get a job, it offers security.

Totally feel you on this. Getting started on Fiverr and Upwork can be super slow, even with low prices. What helped me was optimizing my profile with clear value-based descriptions, using buyer-focused keywords, and sending personalized proposals daily. Also, try tapping into niche Facebook groups or Reddit communities sometimes one small gig outside those platforms can kick things off. Keep pushing, the momentum will build!

If you're running your own business, you're going to have to get through the first year or two. Be prepared.

Yeah it will be really difficult at first, but it will be okay once you get your groove. Just be patient ig. Work on your portfolio so they get to see your what you can offer more.

Unless you already got a network, I cannot recommend it. Even with a network, you need enough interested to keep you financially afloat.

You might be targeting wrong platforms. You need to list yourself on platforms like upwork where there are higher paying clients .

Just be patients very soon you get alot of clients

Been on that situation a month ago. What I did now is to have a micro niche and focus on a specific persona. This provides me decent leads and gives me less burned out and stress.

all micro worker sites need dealing with methods when posting gig or offers for sales, getting buyer trust is the first challenge which need to sort to derive first sale in the choosing market.

Any
Did you manage to break through and get your first clients? What actually worked? Also, to everyone else: how has the freelance landscape changed over the past year, especially with the massive rise of AI tools? Are clients moving away from hiring junior/mid devs for basic tasks, or has it actually opened new opportunities? I’m especially curious about the stack choice nowadays. For instance, is there any point in focusing on WordPress anymore, given how oversaturated that niche is? With tools like Claude, a client (or a dev) can theoretically generate a full Next.js site with clean code in minutes. How do you adapt to this? Do you double down on complex enterprise ecosystems, or do you pivot to AI-driven generation?

Yes it Working. You can apply on upwork give time on there i hope you found good project.

The thing is, the competition on Upwork feels absolutely brutal right now. Between thousands of AI-generated proposals and massive bidding wars, it feels almost impossible to get a client to even open my cover letter. At least, that's how it looks from my perspective

The first issue you will have is getting the attention from peoples to not just pass your gig for that you need catchy titles and design . When they enter on your profile they need to see a great portofolio where they will see great quality work. That is the first step to have any chance to land a job as right now the competition is fierce in the marketplaces

from what i have seen the first clients are usually the hardest to get many freelancers build momentum through networking direct outreach and a strong portfolio instead of relying only on marketplaces once you have a few good reviews getting new clients becomes much easier

You need to reach out the clients and try to be creative, if you just parking there hoping someone to order, not gonna happens, Fiverr literally already over saturated with desperate people around the world to find some pennies, use boost ads, use reviews, everyone literally do anything to get up to the first page.
