Hey, I’m a web dev with 5 years of experience.
I lost my job recently because of company issues, so I decided to try freelancing.

The problem is, I posted on Fiverr and Upwork, dropped my prices in half just to build some reputation, but still getting zero clients.

I see a lot of people saying freelancing works for them. How? How do they even get their first few clients?

Any honest advice would help a lot.

Tough start is normal try refining your gigs and targeting a niche. The first few clients usually come from persistence and smart positioning.

Its a shark tank. You have to come armed with a portfolio of projects that are not wordpress related, but proper web projects. Do you have those? Are you displaying them? Are you using marketing channels such as articles on freelancer sites, or you just "hoping" people will find you?

You have a portfolio page, which is basically a digital business card. Where are you displaying that, and who are you talking to on social media regularly about it?

Freelancing is tough at first, but focus on building a strong portfolio, target a niche, and reach out to clients directly, offer great quality and communication, even at lower prices initially, once you get reviews, it’ll start picking up...stay consistent!

In order to start receiving orders on freelance exchanges, you need at least 1 review, SEO optimization of the card, and be at the top of the search results (using ads).

Another way to find clients is to use social media and look for clients there.

It's not going to be like a stable job - getting paid from the first month. You need to figure out the whole process. Look for customers on all platforms especially reddit, X and fb.

making decision to start with a good niche or selling tasks/gig is the key in freelance which effect in the sales/revenue, there are chances to resells others product for some percentage remit.

Yes, it works. But the beginning is tough.
On Fiverr and Upwork, no one notices you without a review, a strong portfolio and an eye-catching description.
Start with a specific niche and try to get your first jobs outside the platform as well (like Reddit, X, dev groups).
The first client is hard, but then it gets easier. It just doesn't stop.

Getting quick visibility is tough, and lowering prices won’t help. Instead, study your competitors’ offerings and create something even better. Find new ways to showcase yourself and prove you’re the best.

Hey man, sorry you lost your job. That sucks but you’re not alone. Honestly, just posting on Fiverr or Upwork and waiting doesn't work well anymore. You gotta send custom proposals every day and make them personal, not copy-paste. Also, start showing your work on a simple portfolio site or even Twitter and LinkedIn. Share your projects, even small ones. When someone finally gives you a shot, go all in and crush it. That first review can open a lot of doors. Keep going, you’re closer than you think.

You can earn the privilege of offering your service in the forum.
If you offer competitive prices, you may get a customer base right here.

getting your first few clients is quite an issue especially in upwork or fiverr because a lot of people are doing freelancing nowadays. What I can suggest to you is to update your resume and think about how you want your clients to see you. It is also a good idea and a good investment if you pay for upwork connects so that you can bid for projects. If you have your first client and you finished the project with them then ask them to leave a good review so that your clients will keep on coming

I think it's all about how you find customers, once you become a customer you do their job or have them do it

It's about building a reputable profile. Without that, getting projects on any platform is tough. You’d probably do better by working with someone who already has projects in hand.

“Word of mouth” also helps. If your work is good, some of your existing clients will eventually refer others to you.

Also, I don’t think you should lower your prices. Don’t offer the cheapest solution. It often comes across as low quality work. Instead, send them a proposal that shows you know your stuff (and you should actually know your stuff too, lol). Offer them a solution, not a price-tag.

Hope that helps a little.

Keep trying freelance marketplaces. Also launch your service on BHW. I think BHW can be a great option for you.
