Is duplicate content "penalty" site wide?

Let's say you have a website with 10 pages of hand written, 100% unique content and you decide you want to add another 10 pages, yet this time you use scraped, or spun content. If Google's duplicate content penalty were true and took effect would it affect the entire site (including the unique pages)? Or just the specific page that's duplicate?

Anyone have any experience with this?

First of all, yes, duplicate content penalty is TRUE.

I believe, if there was "enough" (not sure the exact percentages) duplicate content on a site, the entire site would be affected.

It really depends on the amount of duplicate content. 10 pages of unique content and 10 pages of dup content will lead to terrible rankings. 1000 pages of unique content and 10 pages of dup content won't really be a problem.

It's a penalty on pages and is not site wide but is does affect the entire site. A site will share it's link juice because of intersite linking and if a pages juice get wiped out via penalty it affects the whole.

Good Question OP.. I am curious also just how much duplicate content could you have on a site. I don't want to do pages but I sometimes hit copyscape and there will be a few lines showing dup content. I always make sure it passes 100% but do you really have to? Every once in awhile I use iwriter for articles and I check them in copyscpae and they are not 100% unique content. I asked the owner about it any he keeps insisting that there is a percentage of all material that could be duped or not fully unique.

As someone who owns an ecommerce site I'll just add that dup content is a myth - at least on ecommerce sites.

And before anyone tries to call me an idiot, I've got almost 1K a day going into my back pocket to prove me right!
