it matters indirectly, because the DR is calculated based on the backlinks that a page has, and backlinks still matter. So, in this regard, DR still matters because if you see a site with high DR (let's say DR 82) it means that the site has a TON of high quality backlinks, which means that - all things being equal - those backlinks will be hard to overthrow by a fresh website (that has no, or very few quality backlinks). Which is what authority is all about...
The good news, however, is that if your site has good topical authority (ie. it addresses the intent of the keywords in great details and the site is centered around a - usually - narrow topic) it can beat the DR 82 website with topical authority alone, so you can still outrank big authority sites if your site addresses the topical authority and relevancy topics the right way...
But like I said, this is in ideal scenario (ie. all things being equal, like I said) but in SEO the things are almost never equal, so you gotta balance and weigh the many variables properly in order to achieve good, stable rankings
