Is DR (domain Rating) on Ahrefs Matters?

Hi everyone, I’d like to ask—does Domain Rating (DR) really matter that much? I have a friend who is quite obsessed with having a high DR.

By the way, I’m working in the black niche, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

DR matters but not in the way most people think.

It’s a third-party metric (from Ahrefs), not something Google directly uses, so obsessing over it alone can be misleading.

In black/competitive niches, what really moves the needle is relevance, link placement and actual link quality not just high DR numbers. I’ve seen lower DR, niche-relevant links outperform random DR80+ links any day.

So, let’s say I’m operating in the gambling niche—what kind of relevant backlinks should I actually be aiming for?

Wouldn’t getting or buying backlinks from other gambling-related websites increase the risk of a Google penalty? I’d really appreciate your insights on this.

DR is just a reputation score, not a ranking factor. It tells you a domain has links, but it doesn’t mean that page will rank.

DR is an indicator for the actual domain authority metric. It can be used to estimate actual authority but it's not the authority. It's like the sound of an approaching vehicle while crossing a road. Some people mistake it for the vehicle.

Domain Rating and similar third-party metrics by themselves don't matter, but what gives a site high rating is the thing that matters. Domain rating is a byproduct.

it matters indirectly, because the DR is calculated based on the backlinks that a page has, and backlinks still matter. So, in this regard, DR still matters because if you see a site with high DR (let's say DR 82) it means that the site has a TON of high quality backlinks, which means that - all things being equal - those backlinks will be hard to overthrow by a fresh website (that has no, or very few quality backlinks). Which is what authority is all about...

The good news, however, is that if your site has good topical authority (ie. it addresses the intent of the keywords in great details and the site is centered around a - usually - narrow topic) it can beat the DR 82 website with topical authority alone, so you can still outrank big authority sites if your site addresses the topical authority and relevancy topics the right way...

But like I said, this is in ideal scenario (ie. all things being equal, like I said) but in SEO the things are almost never equal, so you gotta balance and weigh the many variables properly in order to achieve good, stable rankings

in BH niches DR is especially important from my experience

Also, when you're ready to understand what real SEO is about check out @bhseoworld 's posts. The guy explains stuff so technical that always makes my head spin (and which is part of the reason for which I've stopped doing this crap called SEO), but if you're dedicated to learn SEO read some of his posts and you'll see what garbage mumbo-jumbo SEO has become....

It is a hint of a website's link profile strength.

Unfortunately, it is a metric and as such can be manipulated, misleading or just downright wrong.

We have some 0.9 DR (yes, below 1) units in our network that would put wannabe DR 40s to shame.

DR does matter but the real thing that matters are the elements that form this DR. Work on getting those correct.
My personal website DR is 23 and my website don't even rank in top 100 for low difficulty keywords.

DR is just a metric, not a ranking factor. Traffic, relevance, and real links matter more.

DR only matters if you sell backlinks and sponsored posts. Otherwise, this metric is useless. It’s a synthetic parameter created specifically by Ahrefs and nothing more.
