Is Delivering Backlinks in Google Sheets now a Thing?

I don't know if I'm paranoid or not, so want to hear the opinion of others.

I was out of the SEO industry for a couple of years, but I strictly remember that PBN's or any other links should never touch Google's eco system.

Storing backlinks in Google Sheets, especially with the exact anchors, was a huge "no" back then.

At one point PBN providers even stopped delivering reports because users would upload them to their Google Drives.

But now I see all these link providers using Google Sheets to manage and deliver backlinks.

Am I in the wrong? Did something change?

I have also seen this, they are using it widely and sharing fully organized sheets with the cleints
 
You're not paranoid; that was a strict rule for years. It changed because Google now focuses on devaluing spam links automatically rather than spying on private Sheets to catch people. Since almost every legitimate agency uses Google Workspace now, a list of links is just white noise instead of a footprint. While PBNs still pose a risk, convenience has overtaken traditional caution in standard outreach.

It's certainly not a great practice. An XLSX file is easy to generate and distribute, and there are a thousand and one other upload sites if the provider really doesn't have their own webspace.

Nothing really changed just mindset.

Google Sheets isn’t the risk, bad links are. Most people use it now for convenience without issues.

Actually there is no real time evidence for that. But the industry realized it was mostly a myth.

Using Google Sheets to track backlinks is generally safe.
 
I'm thinking of launching a case study comparing two backlink campaigns, one managed in sheets, another in excel. Will keep you updated.
 
Yes it is common. And crazy to me.

I personally stay away from anything related to them when it comes to PBNs.

It’s a precaution if nothing else.

I think risk is low since these are two different departments but still.
 
old paranoia mostly faded. google doesn’t need ur sheets to detect links, they already crawl everything. biggest risk still footprints in links themselves, not where u store reports

Yeah but MS Office is not free whereas Google Sheets are.
 
Yes, many people deliver backlinks in google sheets now, it is simple and easy to manage.
 
It’s more about risk management now than strict “never use Google tools” rules. Sheets itself isn’t the issue what matters is footprint, patterns, and how clean the link network looks overall.

Yes, delivering backlinks through Google Sheets is now common in SEO because it makes reporting, tracking, and client collaboration easier. Google mainly evaluates the quality and relevance of backlinks,not on whether they are stored or delivered through Google Sheets.

A lot of that fear was based more on SEO paranoia than proven evidence. There’s still no solid proof that Google directly penalizes sites just because backlink reports are stored in Google Sheets or Drive.
