Well, if you want to rank and need organic traffic YES it's a necessity.
 
You can track your competitor backlinks and other seo tricks.. after the analysis , you can start the seo
 
It's no different than any team sports.
You may win, but you would want to be prepared.
Do you sit down and watch the other team play?
Know their strategies, know where the weakest link is and where they excel at?

It's like a compass for ocean travel. You may get lost if you ignore it. I'd highly recommend competitor analysis unless you want to pull off a stunt or if it's just a churn & burn project.

Well No. Any Search give thousand of results. But you are basically competing with top ten results which is like ability which if you have for a niche you will rank. Don't do what your competitors are doing. For long term do just the opposite of what they are doing. After that see what strategies is unavoidable and copy. For ex if they make do follow links make nofollow links etc. Competitors analysis is for study of the niche and if you can make better content. If you also do the same thing the niche becomes unnecessarily competitive. So more and more link dependent instead of content dependent. Same if it is a short term project.

When I use to give competitive exam I never saw what others are studying. Just genuine interest in subject which only top rankers have. I only saw the minimum statistical requirements like cut off etc for that rank that is all. I got All India rank 40 something for GATE exam
all India 4000 something in JEE and AIEEE and IES to qualify for interview etc. Its like coaching institutes in India that has made colleges and Job exam unnecessarily competitive and a business.

Nice way of putting it. I am also new to SEO just after reading this I realized it's not how much you analyze it's what you do with that analysis that matters.

Correct, data is useless if you don't know how to read it let alone utilizing it.

How often someone searches for the keywords you are targeting - your future competitors, their "rankings" in search engines,
their volume of website visitors. How optimized are they? How relevant are the words on their main page to what is searched?

All these lessons learned can help you prioritize which content or webpage to make most relevant.

Yes, It's very necessary because we have to check the backlinks of competitors so that we will try to create backlinks on those sites where our competitors have created links.
 
Personally, I didn't find it 100% necessary but it can be very useful, for new ideas, approaches and everything you didn't know so far.
 
For all projects it is not necessary. For example if you starting sone unique project not covered by many blogs, there is not much to analyse.
 
At least I should know who are my competitors, why they are on top?
