Yes, it does. Only check your backlinks when absolutely necessary. It is like your credit report. If you check your credit report too often, your credit score goes down. The same with backlinks.

yes it would totally HURT your site, you will lose your ranking and be sandboxed instantly

ok, just check the backlinks of your competators every minute, just set up a macro and test it.
then you will not have to go on others theary

Apart from backlinkwatch. com and yahoo. co.uk which other websites are good for an acurate(ish) snapshot of a website's backlinks?
This is another one you'll see kicked about, but it's sort of beta and doesn't seem to be as good as backlinkwatch. You'll have to judge for yourself.

Yes I know I'm going to catch flack for this because I'm new to SEO, but... what exactly do proxies have to do with backlink checking? For example:
"Please note that we have temporarily disabled the ?Home Page PR? option so as to not put too much strain on our limited number of proxies."
"The new tool relies on an expanded base of proxies which give much greater speed by allowing the tool to check multiple backlinks simutaneously."
Ok yes dumb question here, but are the proxies being used for any type of anonymity purposes? Or is it simply so that more servers can run checks for links, like multi-threading in a CPU to make it faster? I'm assuming the latter.
