Serious newspapers aren't a guarantee of topical authority and juice.
PR has nothing to do with SEO.

When I was new to this I thought the bookmarks and web 2.0 spam are the reason my competitors rank.
And I was wrong.

It does nothing, but gets your website penalized.

The only links that will help you with rankings are the ones from pages with content relevant to yours. Everything else is just garbage, we are not in 2005 where you could fill blogs with spammy comments and boost rankings... now Google just doesn´t take them into account.. even for negative SEO purposes... so don´t waste your time with that, and spend more time doing better links... and don´t forget your own internal ones, that is very important also, and has the same rules... content relevancy.
