If Google knows what you are doing then yes of course its bad for your site.
But the trick is to make it look like genuine traffic/sharing etc and not like blackhat SEO.
If you are new to it the best way is to build throw away sites that you can try to rank and if they fail you can start with a new site.

It is the same as anything you do ever in life, there is always the possibility it will fail, no matter what type of hat you put on you might still end up doing something G will not like and boom before you know what hit you, you will be out of the rankings for good. I read a post by a blackhatter here not long ago, He said there was no type of hat really as we are all working towards the same goal. The key on the other hand is to find out what works and if you know it will get your site in trouble make sure you do everything right and don't get caught.

You need to state for yourself - if you will get caught(and most likely you will if you ask such a question) - you will not going to suffer much - you will just smile and go further armed with a better knowledge!

I'd say the answer is pretty much out in the open.
But its harmful if you dont know what you're doing. If done right, it'll be a tremendous boost for your rankings.

If your site has alot of unique and good content quality Black Hat SEO can't hurt your site.

For the first few months I would use only white hat SEO and keep on adding quality content.After getting a stable rank in SERP, i would add link to PBNs and WEB2.0. Use GSA only for tier 1 and not on money site.

If you are talking about manual linkbuilding with GSA blast for tier 2 links I have seen success rate of 95% and above out of 100 websites. So, I don't find it that harmful.

Don't ever do it! Matt knows it all. You will rather consider WHITE HAT and wait 3-4 years to rank for 1 medium competitive keyword.
