IMHO you should first target less competive keywords, because from your questions I can see you are not that experienced so I don't think so you should rank for niche where buzzfeed is #1. Try targeting some keywords with lower competition. You will earn A LOT more money if you rank #1 for few long tail keywords with 100-200 searches, then if you rank #11 for keyword with 10k montly searches.

About your question,it all depends. Backlink from buzzfeed would probably be some comment or something? Maybe even nofollow. That wouldn't help you that much, even less if there is a lot outbound links. But I guess its won't hurt you so go ahead. But you should make sure your on page SEO is good and build few HQ links etc. There are thousands tutorials with thousands words in it,make sure to read few of them to understand this better.

This will help you in your overall link building strategy, but just 1 link will not help you to outrank your competitor!

Just a couple of links from your competitors site will not help in ranking. Just do a quick check for URL and domain metrics between your domain / url and competitors domain/url. And then try to get more authority and metrics than your competitor. Apart from this keep an eye on number of referring domains, ip and backlinks.

You have to build more links,a single link will not make much difference.Try to get more links from high metrics site that would help you for good ranking. And also use social media to get good traffic to your site.

The higher chances are: The article/post which u will use to get the link to your site on buzzfeed, if it is better than the post on buzzfeed which already has the ranking, then the new post on buzzfeed will get the rank. Yes, it will also send a signal to Google that your site is relevant to this keyword, but to beat buzzfeed, you will need to have a site with enough relevant contents and with a nice infra structure.
