In the past, many people didn’t pay much attention to the fundamentals of SEO. They would often focus primarily on buying backlinks rather than investing in a complete SEO plan that included on-page optimization, technical audits, competitor analysis, keyword research, content strategy, and then link building.
The mindset is changing.
Google has evolved, and so have SEO clients. People are becoming more educated about what they are doing, what they should be buying, why they need it, and what the next step should be. They are also spending more time researching strategies, comparing approaches, and listening to what other experienced SEOs are recommending.
That’s why I believe the process has shifted from:
Buy links → wait for rankings.
to:
Audit → analyze → build the right strategy → optimize → build backlinks → measure and improve.
Backlinks are still important, but they work much better when they are part of a properly structured SEO plan.
So yes the audit comes first, and link building comes next.
