Is Arkansas a safe and cheap place?

Hello everyone,
Im an international student who will attend Southern Arkansas University which is located in Magnolia, Arkansas.
I Just wanted to know if Magnolia in particular and Arkansas in general a safe and good place for a student? and how is it different from the other states in USA?

I've spent lots of time in Arkansas. Depends on the area of course....but they have some larger cities and some VERY remote areas. Larger cities will be as safe as any larger city in the us. Beautiful country out there and lots to do and explore if you enjoy the outdoors

I live in AR and have traveled to a lot of places, unfortunately I haven't been to many places in southern AR. Most of the areas that I have been to down there I didn't care for all that much but to each his own and I have never gone outdoors down there which could be why I am missing out. I know I used to hate Little Rock as well but I was down there a few months back and they had cleaned up some areas like the River Walk and they clean and fun this time around, of course they still had shit hole areas as well and all of Texarkana sucks IMO. The Northwest Area is very nice IMO, good economy and tons of things nearby if you like the outdoors such as bike/hiking trails, good camping, rivers to kayak/canoe, decent festivals going on. At the same time the Wal-Mart home offices are up here so technology wise we have things very good as well. Hope it works out well for you, if you have any specifics I will do my best to help you out as I have friends all over AR.

It is a nice safe place for a student....
you will have no problems....

arkansas is safe and people are nice.

you will find college kids make their own fun - so even if there is not alot to do around where you are - you will still like it.

LOL...I grew up in Arkansas and can confirm the above statement.

Typical nightly phone call in Arkansas:

Them: hey
Me: yep
Them: whatta ya doing?
Me: Bout to head to tha levee.
Them: allight, i got a 30 pack.
Me: see ya there

In all seriousness, great place. I lived in West Memphis, right across the river from Memphis, Tenn. Went up to the Ozarks every winter to dear hunt, and Spring River every summer to go rafting.

Depends on how you feel about earthquakes. google "new madrid fault zone". FEMA is anticipating some major shit down there.

low rent, low crime index. safe & cheap indeed.
although it is in the middle of nowhere so that's kinda what you'd expect

Arkansas is like the red headed step child when it comes to states. Hardly anyone moves to Arkansas. It may be a pretty state (haven't been) but nobody really wants to go there. So is it cheap? Yeah probably one of the cheaper places in the US to live.

I have a kid that goes to SAU Magnolia it is a great place to go to school you will have no problems while at school they have a police station on campus ready to put trouble to rest

I'm not saying move to AR but that is not true. Growth and economy are good in AR, especially NWA.

Seriously though, as an international student you probably want to think about attending school somewhere more diverse and tolerant, like in the NE or Cali.

It's pretty safe in that area. I went to SAU for awhile and live about 30 minutes from magnolia. Have lived her all my life and most people are nice, just a lot of country and ghetto people in this area, so you might experience a bit of culture shock if you have never been in a southern town before. But, people are nice and sociable here. Just don't expect a lot to do because there are no malls or anything of entertainment locally (unless your into peach festivals lol) . Also, you will have to drive at least an 1hr and half to get to a decent mall and shopping unless your fine with walmart and basic stores. So get used to driving, or shopping online a lot if you not going to have transportation. Other than that, cost of living is great especially if you work online and make decent cash because regular jobs here pay crap. You can get a nice house with a backyard in a suburban neighborhood for around $500 a month, a gated 3 bedroom 2 bath condo with garage for about $1000 a month, and apartments are even cheaper. If your going to be living on campus then you will have even less expenses. I don't really go to magnolia much anymore unless I'm passing thru, but I highly doubt anything has changed. Personally, I'm relocating next year not because of crime or anything but out of boredom and better opportunities elsewhere. I'm sure you will get bored pretty quick here and be ready to leave, but you could be the type of person that enjoys small town living. The only really high places of crime in Ar is Little Rock and places further north. I would suggest going to a place more diverse,but it's been awhile since I attended SAU so I don't know what the international student ratio is like there anymore.
