I'm thinking of a new project to do after all my school work... I thought about making a blog. I want to create an NBA news/rumors/feature articles blog. I know Bleacher Report, ESPN, and Yahoo are impossible to surpass. But is this idea worth giving a shot?

I need some thoughts from the experts here. I'm an avid NBA fan, and I've been attached to basketball since I was a kid. I learned that the best way to earn money is loving what you do. I think monetizing with an NBA blog is the perfect job for me because I love what I'll be doing. Content is not gonna be a problem because I'm a writer myself.

What do you guys think?

I think that individual blog sites, one for each team, will give you a better chance at top rankings - rather than one blog covering everything

Hmm, I agree. But am I not limiting the target audience? Let's say there are 10 Million Hawks fans in the WORLD, but there are 1 Billion NBA Fans in the world. Not everyone is interested with the Hawks (just an example).

I want to do one on my favorite team also, but as I said, I'm not sure how to start or how to go about this plan. I have the writing skills and the NBA knowledge to do this, but I just don't know how and where to begin.

Simple:

register a domain
get host for it
install wordpress
then start writing about nba
after 60 days, writing daily

you will see very good results,

trust me :)

Good idea but keep in mind that there are billions of NBA blogs out there already...

Yes, I am aware with that, but the same can also be said for Tech Blogs right? There are gazillions of Tech sites out there, and yet all of them (the good ones) manage to still rake in cash even if they aren't sitting on top of the mountain. That's what I want to happen... I don't need to beat Bleacher Report or ESPN. I don't even have to be the TOP 10 NBA Blog. I just want to be right there, being one of the latest news breaker, or feeding the people with the latest rumors/trades. I will have a following right? I mean, if I happen to be the first one to break the story of the next NBA sensation (e.g Linsanity), I'll get some following..

I'm torn though. I'm not sure if I'm trying to outsmart myself here. Is this really a lost cause, or do I have a shot? I don't have a huge budget btw. Actually, right now, I don't have any yet. I might only be working with a $30 budget to begin with. :(

You're better off doing your favorite team, if you're going to do the Lakers, let me know, I'll help out. LOL

You can always base it around just 1 team or division or conference and make a "around the league" section and have all NBA news there.

I think it would be interesting to do. But you blog will have to have a twist. Like add special play of the week with music, or something like that. I wanted to do a nba blog myself.

I think this is a great idea, but not a unique one.
I have made a Blake Griffin fan page/blog and it is getting up to 2k search engine impressions a day according to webmaster tools.
With a general nba blog, you can target all of the nba superstars and latest news/rumors.

As stated above, there are many nba blogs out there since there are so many fans... how will you stand out?
Do those other nba blogs know seo? or are they some kid who just loves to write about the nba?

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I really want to make this a General NBA blog. I will focus on news/trades/rumors and insights on Superstars and Teams. It won't be the most complete in terms of 100% pure NBA info per team, but it will have the latest news and rumors, and also articles about the most relevant happenings around the league. :)

I have no idea how to monetize this though. I definitely won't bother with Adsense.

I sent you a link to a very popular NBA news blog.

im a big NBA fan too, I considered doing some sort of NBA blog/s but wasnt sure if it would work out for me

I wonder if there is a way for all of us to work together and make an uber legit nba authority site...

Haha, that would be nice. :) I wonder how such a site could be monetized though.. :)

I will definitely push this plan. I'm just thinking of a domain name now and I'm looking for some nice free WP Themes.

Is there anyone here who can suggest how I can monetize this blog? Of course this is an interest blog, but obviously, I wouldn't make an NBA blog out of just pure passion for the game. If that's the case, I'd just play some ball outside. I wanna earn from this too. Any ideas?

That's a great idea, check out your would-be competitor and learn from them on how they monetize their site, backlinks and SEO. You'll learn a ton just by observing / watching them. Good luck!

It's a very crowded niche and I think that the revenue potential is somewhat lacking. You say monetize but how? Adsense keywords are probably low EPC. If you did do an individual sports team maybe you could sell tickets... but that is a reach in itself.

My votes:
In terms of raw profit potential / risk this is not a good idea.
In terms of doing what you like and learning along the way this is a good idea.

Suggestions: Go more towards microniche basketball category. Custom basketball court affiliate program/basketball gear/ etc.

Good Luck

Good Luck
