Is affiliate marketing free to start?

How do I choose the right niche for affiliate marketing?
Choosing the right niche is very important in affiliate marketing. I try to pick something I’m interested in and people are already searching for. It should also have good products to promote and not too much competition. This makes it easier to create content and get sales.

Choosing the right segment will be great for your business. However, choosing the right segment will take a lot of time and effort. You need to experience and experiment, this will help you find the right segment.

You can start with niches you're passionate about, where you possess a deeper understanding of the audience's wants and aspirations, fears and frustrations, than most others do.
This will give you an instant advantage over other marketers in the niche.
Another common tip: Follow the money.
Choose one of the "money niches" - Self improvement, finance, health & fitness, investment, etc. - and then drill down to a sub-niche you care about.

To choose the right niche for affiliate marketing, focus on something you’re passionate about or knowledgeable in. Make sure the niche is profitable by checking affiliate programs and commission rates. Use tools like Google Trends or Ahrefs to confirm there’s consistent demand. Avoid overly saturated markets, but some competition is a good sign. Choose a niche that solves real problems and has long-term (evergreen) potential. Popular niches include pets, health, finance, and software. The right niche combines passion, profit potential, and search interest—helping you stay motivated and earn steadily over time.

For me, the health niche and it's sub-niches are the best in terms of ROI.

Really appreciate the help!

For passive income, I would say find a software with affiliate program which solves specific problem. Then market that software to its targeted audience on twitter, fb, etc. It will be hard but if some clients stay subscribed. You'll get recurring commissions.

My two cents on the topic:

1) Always choose a niche where you can promote products that you understand and are genuinely interested in.

2) KYC (Know Your Customer) – this is a key rule you should follow before launching any marketing campaign.

3) From personal experience, I’d like to add: when choosing an affiliate program, don’t focus solely on the commission rate. You might chase a 40% payout but end up with zero sales. Meanwhile, a 10% commission program could bring you a steady stream of customers!

Pick a niche based on your interests, market demand, and profitability. Focus on evergreen topics with good affiliate programs and low-to-medium competition.

It's free. Just choose a regular product from Amazon, like a toothbrush, and share the review on Facebook. See how your friends and family respond, hopefully, it will give you some ideas.

Search on google about "Finance, Auto, Baby toys" and find out your all competitors. What are doing they. Read, research and start doing from today.

Sure, but it has to start with the first failure.
