Is a web hosting business still worth it?

Hi guys!

A few weeks ago I made a bid for domain name previously owned by a pretty big company, I won the domain (unexpected) but now I don’t know what to do with it? Previously there was a fairly successful web hosting company on it. Now I don’t know if something like that would worth it for me to jump in.

what would you do?

Ps. I don’t have much knowledge on that kind of things so most likely I would need to hire someone to take care off the server/backend part.

Is the domain getting organic traffic?

If so it is from people looking for hosting.

If you cannot be bothered organising it, join something like hostgator, bluehost or someone who was a rival affiliate program and just auto redirect to their site with your affiliate link.

It dose get some traffic. It is also on a different language on a smaller audience. I was thinking to start up with a reseller and grow from there, I just don’t know how much profit and how much should I invest in it.

few options you can reach out to host to see if they are interested. Put the domain back up for sale. Build out a blog on it or last you could start your own hosting company but that will take work and time and money to really start making money with it

There are many website hosting templates you can use to build a site on your domain. Then you can just resell hosting from other companies , or use their affiliate program to make money

Is that a possible method? Buying domains that already have some authority and would gather traffic then just leaving them with your Aff links on them.

Yes that is a method. You just create an auto-redirect from your homepage with your affiliate link in it to a site that offers a similar service. You dont make them click it, it needs to be automatic.

Lets say you own idontcontibutehosting.com people that come to that site are clearly looking for webshosting.

You cannot be bothered doing it so you create a redirect script to say hostgator.com?affiliate=me

People come to your page and are automatically redirected to hostgator via your affiliate link.

I have made quite a tidy sum doing things like that.

That’s genius. Does a domain keep its page ranking regardless of what content is on the actual domain? As in, if you have a website that was ranked #3 for a keyword and someone sells the domain, would it still be #3 even if you just have the redirection?

It tends not to be page ranking as such but branding.

Start with reseller plans then setup your own hosting if it worth it

So people are still searching the brand rather than it appearing under certain keywords? That’s very neat; you’re a smart man for figuring this out.
