I saw mention of this is some threads. I have mine on my baby plan at hostgator among several other sites.

No not at all.....an Authority site is built on content not server specs

don't hatch the eggs before they are laid. Create a great site, see its traffic increasing and one day you will feel the time to move onto a VPS or dedi. But don't start it from VPS directly.

While I do not know your definition of "Authority", I'd say a site that has a lot of traffic coming in (100s of visitors per day) needs better hosting than a hostgator baby plan. No reason to invest today, but as the number of visitors increase, you need to think about the investment, as google does consider page load speed as one metric for ranking your site.

It depends on how much traffic are you getting. If your authority site doesn't have a lot of traffic then Shared hosting is perfectly fine for your purpose.
