Is a career as a developer the way to go?

Being a developer/programmer and being employed is a big waste in my opinion.

If you are to be a programmer, you better create your own software/service and sell it yourself. The difference between this and being someone else's employee is day and night.

Just wondering if you guys have any good resources to start learning. There are so many out there its hard to just pick one because it might be missing A, or B, or C.

React skills are the hottest thing currently in front-end. My advice would be to start building apps with that and learn the whole range of base skill that are necessary at the same time (html/css/vanilla js). It's going to be a mountain but a small one if you pick newbie friendly courses. Video courses work better. Even if you blindly follow the instructions, that's good - you mind will start to make the connections.

Yes. But it's better to get paid to learn until you become a good one ;)

^^ put well. I want to literally be paid to learn/get better at my craft and move up the ladder slowly. Would i have freelancing, a side business, on the side for developing? absolutely. Would i quit my day job once those are paying the bills? yes. I dont want to work for someone else but i guess you have to start somewhere to set yourself up for success

Have have to agree with @jazzc demand way out strips supply currently, like a standard day rate for even just php Devs where I'm working now is £320. Guys in their 20s on £320 a day, some even without degrees. Not many other professionals get that. And while it's true schools might produce more developers there is a limit to the amount of people who are capable of coding. Our dependence on software will always out strip that supply.

With regards to globalisation, countries like India are getting more and more expensive to out source to. Plus with additional security requirements/regulations it's not anywhere as attractive as it used to be for serious companies.

I would agree if reaching an equivalent income to being employed while being self-employed didn't equate like twice the work for most people. But even if you aspire to be your own boss, it's great when you get paid each month while learning the skills. Of course, you need some basic skills and ability before you apply to a company.

Then again, the best people are not really in it for the cash. It's one of those jobs where you really kind of need to be in to it or you will age out of it sooner or later (you need to be able to compete with young people when you're older, and if the subject doesn't interest you enough you can only figure how hard it's going to be to keep your skills up-to-date). Better to have plan-B if that's the case, and a lot of people move to some management position later into their careers.

Who knows i might do this for a week and hate it so i guess that part is up to me to figure out. I think being a developer is super cool but also intimidating because you need to know so much.

I go with freecode, but no matter where they all have good content. And don't make the mistake to think you have to know so much and remember everything. Even the best devs going back to check the syntax of a language, if they don't use it everyday. Thousands of resources out there and a million of coder willing to help.;)

I will have to say that developing can be frustrating. Example in point: why is not this Neural Network providing consistent output for the same given input?

Beat my damned head out, but eventually I will find out why and correct it.

for starting cooding I suggest two ways

1_ MOOC: stands for massive open online course, like coursera or edx...you can find some free and other paid...

2_websites that teach coding both front end and backend: especially paid ones, like LYNDA, UDACITY and team treehouse,

good luck

I was a programmer in

Html
Css/1/2/3
Javascript/ajax
Php
Mysql

Drove me mad that why i become
A internet marketer .

Programming a big commitment and can get very depressing , you need to swallow book afther book , i have spent over 2k over the 2016 year understanding php 7 and security with apache server , as you can see one programming lanuage takes time to learn or add more info to what you no , the competition is huge know php is teaches even at my local school for children and xhtml and css so even bright children swallow the code like a sweet as for me all takes time , php and wordpress is a massive topic know And i dont see wordpress going it here to stay , php scripts do sell but not like wordpress plugin ...

I wish you luck and master the code but takes years to really learn and it endless but children seem to pick the subject up in weeks as to me months .....

Income ok £80/ph freelance projects

Work around in london 25k year

Bad thing
Full depression always in front screen full headache not much rest always iratated , always studdying refrences ...

Good luck

If i was you , i would first download the php manual for refrence .

Then goto
https://www.w3schools.com/php/

And study all the basics to advance then afther you have mastered the above courses

Goto
Udemy.com
And study advance php course.

Then

Master each php code standards to really no your stuff from the php manual.

Then i would look around the .net look for a really trending website like facebook and see if you can clone there website for programming exspirence
Then i would move to a datting website and clone one of them to test my skills then move to even more harder projects like a full cms clone and then a doctors appointment system.

Then you no your ready for this bad world .

But all takes time effort and money .....

Good luck
