what generation?
you can upload songs to your ipod using the newer versions of winamp or foobar2000 if you have 1st or 2nd gen shuffle:
if it's newer: 3rd or 4th gen, you'll need itunes because of the voiceover feature (at least i wasn't able to find any other applications when i last looked for it, the voiceover feature of the shuffle was pretty new at that time, so it can be there's something since then)
but why don't you install itunes?
