iPhone without a data plan?

I know many of you own iPhones so I decided to ask this question here

I'm planning on upgrading to an iPhone but I really don't want to pay for the data plan which costs a complimentary 35$-60$ a month. There is free wifi everywhere around me anyway.
So is there a way to use my old Fido contract and sim with an iphone?
I presume that it will need to be unlocked too?

If you have an unlocked iphone, you can just use the wifi and not pay for the data plan.

As long as you have a sim card you can unlock the phone, very easy to do yourself, if you know the basics.

Don't upgrade to 3.1.3 if you do then you will not be able to unlock the phone and its really impossible to enjoy the iphone without a data plan. I've been jailbreaking iphones for a while now.

if you upgrade through att your going to pay 30 dollar for data plan for the first month then just call att and tell them your not using iphone and tell them to take the data plan out and they will then just use ur iphone

call att to unlock the phone for you internationally they are going to give you code which your going to enter at and its going to be unlocked
