I went to a public place to use their wifi. I looked up their ip address on whatismyipaddress and it said the ip is from some isp I have never heard of. After looking up the name of the isp it seems that they are a company that provides internet to businesses. what surprised me is the location shown in whatismyipaddress. it's not even in the same state as me. the location is like 1500 miles from where I was sitting. I thought maybe whatismyipaddress is inaccurate and went to several other ip location websites. they all agreed with whatismyipaddress. have you ever heard of this? I thought ip location is accurate. I mean I know it can say you are in one city but you are actually in the next door city. but 1500 miles difference?

These services use databases that map IP values to geolocations. E.g. these databases have entries like "45.99.*.* - 45.124.12.**: Europe France Paris". They are updated regularly, but might be off.
And yes they might be very inaccurate. I checked one IP address recently on iplocation(dot)net, the results varied from California to New York

Some IP location databases are woefully out of date, usually due to relying on the free versions of database services. It's also possible that the public place might be routing traffic through proxies. I'm not exactly sure why they would, but it's possible ;)

Is not 100% accurate, it will show you an estimated location but still might not be true any IP geo location tool is a 50% 50% that is correct or not but as a reference is usefull so do not depend to much in those tools for accurate information.
