Quite often when doing backlink research on competitors I view the page that their link is reported to be on there is no sign of the anchor text or any reference to the competitors domain.

I have tried 'view source' and locating any reference that way but have no luck.

Is this a black hat technique?

maybe they have a pbn with ahrefs blocked
or a 301 and you will see the backlinks soon (1 or 2 weeks if is new)

it's not block ahrefs because ahrefs is crawling it...

perhaps the 301 but some of the pages are weeks old

it's not the first time i've come across it

infact a few months ago i got 1000s of back links ( that i didn't do) . They all appeared in googles search console.

they were all spammy as hell, but when i clicked on them my link wasn't there and it redirected to a business in the same industry as me but on the other side of the world ( so not a competitor)

very strange!

Yes I know what you mean! I tried following up with Ahrefs myself but they never got back to me. Would love to know what others think of this.

My own thinking. Could be totally wrong. I think the page is very old and while ahrefs found the backlink previously, it has now been removed by the site themselves but ahrefs did not update for it.

me too came across that kind of scenario. no idea of how it has been done
