Interupting a competitors Google Ad Words campign

I work in an niche industry of only 4 other competitors in my city.

As a whole my competitors are fairly ethical and we all work to a high standard.

That changed last week, when a very dubious operator has entered this market space and is now
burning money on Google Adwords.

3 months ago, he tried getting onto the 1st page of Google by filling up Google local review with fake reviews. Just think of 50 reviews
appearing in the space of a month! But, after about 2 months, these all disappeared overnight. I presume Google knew they were fakes and deleted them

Now, he has mutated again. This time with a Google Adwords account where is appears on top.

What are my best options:

1) Use Google Adwords myself to freeze him out of the market. I have a good budget for this.
2) Use a click farm to continually click on his Google promoted link.
3) Something else

Any recommendations or opinions would be welcome.

These are all stupid ideas OP. Adwords is simple, optimize your Adwords so your Quality Score is better than his. You've apparently been in this niche longer than him, tell us why he is able to beat you unless you haven't managed to build up a good quality score? Improve your campaign. Its that simple. Buy some books on Adwords from Amazon and start optimizing.

well, throw enough money at a campaign and you rank better right?

(Believe it or not, 10 years ago, one of businesses was almost build on Google Adwords...back in the day when it cost only
$50 for a month's worth of advertising...but I stopped using when that $50 went up to $1200 a month but that is another story...)

Throwing money at it blindly is NOT the way to go. Make sure your ad copy is as good as it can be. And are you advertising on exact match? If not are you using a long list of negative keywords?

But as an interim measure, what would you do with this competitor?

The only thing I can say for sure is start reading. The ideas you had in the first post were pretty bad. Improve your advertising and boost your SEO. Do it right and you'll be fine.

Also consider doing Bing Ads. Your competitor may not be advertising there and while it has a lot less traffic/users it is also cheaper. It works VERY much like Adwords so a lot of the books advice still applies.

Stop focusing on what you should do to the competitor. There's enough IM money for us all. Just focus on making your strateg{y|ies} better.
