Hey there,

right now i'm using a really unreliable host :-/. Many downtimes and bad support. My domain is also hosted with them. I would like to change to hostmonster with my hosting and to namecheap with my domain.

My question is the following:

Is it possible to avoid a 404 page during the change process? The domain transfer will take some time they told me. What happened if google index my site during this phase.

I'm a little bit afraid to loose my rankings because of that :-/.

Any suggestions are really appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Regards

Pete

when you join hostmonster you'll get in ip with a folder to use as a url... set your site up on that ip. Then when you are done, update your nameservers. This will jump back and forth between the two servers for a few hours.

After a day or two you can cancel your host with crap isp. No downtime and no 404's.
That how's i transfer sites to my server.

Hey,

sorry.. i do not really get that. I open an account at hostmonster. Do i need to use the domain i want to transfer as my existing domain or doesn't it matter.

Which ip do i have to use for that folder?

Sometimes I write like an idiot, well most of the time.

Sign up for an account at hostmonster. Tell them you'll use your current domain name. After you finish the signup and pay you'll get a welcome email. In that email will be your instructions on how to login and ftp to your site. They'll give you a temp url to use while you switch your domain over to them. it'll usually be something like: http://123.43.564.32/~username or something like that. FTP in and copy your website into the hostmonster site. Then when both yourdomain.com and http://123.43.564.32/~username look the exact same... login to whatever company you used to buy your domain. Update the nameservers to the ones provided by hostmonster.

Wait 24 hours.

Walla, site is now on hostmonster and broadcasting with no down time.

Ok! Now i get it ;-).

One last question:

my domain is hosted by domainpeople.com (my isp did that for me)

So i want to transfer my domain from domainpeople to namecheap. During the domain transfer will not happen anything too if i use your description?

Sorry for the many questions ;-). Just want to make sure!

Regards

I've never transferred domains to another domain company. But I'd first change the domain to namecheap and then do your hosting.

Domain Transfer:
Usually painless, all you need is the domain password and your new registrar will handle the rest. You don't have to worry about the name server settings, they will all be intact. Make sure you new hosting is ready before updating the name servers.

Hosting Change:
To avoid 404s, you just have to make sure that you grab your entire /www folder and upload it to your new host. Usually painless if they are both running CPanel. As long as the URLs are the same, no harm done.

Hope this helps..

Hey and thanks for your answers! So setting up my static site should be fine..

How about my blog in the subdirectory!

Do i copy all the wordpress files to the directory and import the database files from the old host?

How about the admin login information..will they change or do i have to install a new wordpress, copy the wp-content folder and import the database?

I'm sorry to ask such questions but sql and php related issues are really difficult to understand for me!

Your help is much appreciated!!

Regards
