The Internet is already consuming at least 8 per cent of Britain's power output, equivalent to the output of three nuclear power stations, and demand is soaring, says one academic.

"It is growing so fast, currently at an exponential rate, that, in theory, it could be using all the UK power generation by 2035.

?We cannot make all that extra power, so we will have to restrict or reduce access, perhaps by metering consumers so they pay for what they use."

Why not take a bit of what that new royalty earned UK?

It seems like some kind of scam the ISP's are about to be running in the UK.

For international bandwidth being used, just lay more cables, a freaking cable from the UK to France would probably be under £5 million, Just lay a few of those. If the UK Government added a small £.10/month tax on every internet package including cell phones they could easily fund some new cables between the UK and Europe as well as fund some more cables between the UK and the US. As they would get £70 million a year. There shouldn't really be more than that to cover more laying of cable.

Yeah we can be sure as shit internet companies will become like energy companies ripping people off.

Once anything becomes a necessity (which you can probably say internet access is or will be) they will charge wtf they like.

it's a nice country, don't get me wrong, in theory.
if you got rid of royals, the filthy dumbocracy we have, the nice shiny weather and fucking mary poppings, this country could be bearable.
you've got nice people, indoctrinated with consumer mindset, so it's a nice place to plough money from.
but living here is goddamn expensive, not to mention how beautiful the weather is

But couldn't new internet companies form if there the existing ones get too expensive and there is a demand for lower price?
