So I was testing out various download programs for firefox and I decided to test out IDM vs. Download Helper. The latter seems to be hit and miss with download speeds depending upon the location and internet speed.

I ran a test downloading a 700 MB file with both programs using a 5 MB download speed. The results are as follows:

IDM = 30 mins
Download Helper = 3 hours!

I don't know how IDM is faster, but I am very impressed. I cannot wait to test this out on my main computer. Has anybody experienced similar results using the programs?

I tested this product. Its really amazing. It has saved a lot of time for me especially when I download videos. I got a free version and was looking for a full version on the forum. Hope somebody could post it.

Part of IDM's method for doing the downloads so fast is that it opens multiple streams and downloads the file in chunks, thereby maxing out your connection. For example, it may split a file into 8 parts, downloading them all simultaneously.

If you watch your download list, when a file finishes downloading, you will see "rebuilding" when it finishes.

And yeah, it rocks.

I started using IDM not long ago too. Definitely recommend this program

Probably because it's too taxing on bandwidth when using multiple stream from some sites so browser developers keep it to one stream only to avoid being fragged by web site owners.

I don't have any preferences on download managers as long it's free and it allows multiple streams and can save passwords. Beyond that it's just eye candy.
