As you know WP have related posts / products, sitewide menu links etc. Is it not enough for notorious "internal linking" optimization? Someone has proof that when using this technique with linking plugins (made extra links), they really amplify their rankings?

Yes. Yo do need it. Contextual links are the best even in this context. Google is pretty good at differentiating between a navigation link and a contextual one.

Yes you do, i see big sites interlinking their big articles to 4-5 other articles in their site

Of course is important , If you feel it difficult

I've seen websites ranking their pillar content using only internal linking from news-type articles. It definitely works.

If you have a lot of posts that answer queries related to a product, it's crucial.

it's more than important, it's a must

why would miss passing link juice to your other pages/posts?
it's true that these links are naturally built, they do pass the power already, but the question is, is it enough?
as much as for external links, the contextual links are the best performing in most cases, so it's the same here,
contextual internal links would help pass more power to the linked pages, could be used to define the pages keywords by anchors and could help to define the important pages of the website and help you take control of the overall link juice and decide which pages may take more than others

The central idea of internal links is to provide more info to interesting users. For example, if I write movie reviews, I can link to actors profiles within the review, so that anyone interested in knowing more about them can check their profiles/bios. The sites like IMDB retain users to a great extent by providing them more and more info on each page. Apart from that, internal links serve the same purpose of external links with additional factors like link relevance and context.
