Internal Linking: contextual vs related posts

Has anyone seen if there is a real advantage of using contextual-type links between posts on a site vs the related posts section at the end?

Obviously having at least a tie between related topic posts is huge but it is far easier to crank out posts than editing in all the related links for each post as the site gets bigger.

I have not measured the effectiveness individually for doing these two. What I normally prefer is to keep it mixed, sometime between the post, sometime under related topic

For anyone interested, i did a bit of testing and while the related posts did some, contextual links are far more effective.
