This isn’t so much a thread for the experienced users on the forum, it’s more so for the newer members. I think that when anyone starts a site, they’re immediately wondering just how to rank their site in terms of how many links they need to buy, as well as what kind of links to get.
Before you even start though, you need to have quality content. A lot of this has been written before on this site, and there’s not much point in me re-writing this. Generally for your main article, you’re looking at 1,500-2,000 words of high quality content. However, you should be mixing this up to ensure that your site looks as natural as possible.
One thing that I’ve been doing a lot lately though is to use pages and posts in conjunction with each other. This is in addition to using a proper silo strategy detailed by @splishsplash over here.
Now this might not apply to everyone that is setting up a money site, but I think it will suit quite a lot of people. The way I normally structure a site is having the static content on pages, and when it comes to news and new developments, I put content on the posts instead. It’s tough to give examples of this because in my niches, I do this all the time and I do not want to give this away.
However, let’s, for talkings sake say you have a site about movies. It’s a pretty tough niche to crack into, but hey, if you want to then go nuts on it. Anyway, if you followed the silo strategy listed in the link above, you should have different sub silos. This would be things like classic films, gangster films etc. I suppose you could also in this example branch out into the different forms of ways to get the films in terms of streaming services and the like.
What I’ve been doing in my niche selection though is to start with the posts, and then link back to the pages. For example, one of the hottest films of last year in terms of hype was The Last Jedi. Since you wouldn’t be doing a review of the film right away (you’d use the page option for this and not the posts option), you might think you’re stuck. That’s not the case, though. Instead, you could start creating posts about The Last Jedi in terms of who General Snoke might be, would Han Solo be back in it etc.
The thing about this is that when it comes to films, the hype train is usually huge. If it’s the case that you’re posting a couple of times a week then it would make sense to interlink these. If you’ve got a decent theme in place, this will work a lot better, too. Now in the example of Star Wars mentioned above we can expand on this a bit.
In terms of using the post option on Wordpress, one post could be about who Snoke might be and also the kind of training he has undertaken and the training he has given to others. Then, in the next post, you would connect the two together by discussing the topic of Kylo and his training. This is of course just a suggestion. There are so many different topics though that it would be impossible to say how well one topic links to another. This is just an idea to help some of you out.
When it comes time to further interlinking though, this would be in the form of the movie review. In this scenario, I would make the review a page on it’s on in Wordpress. In that review, you could discuss how some of the theories that were discussed previously panned out. It is at this point that you’d then link back to the post you made about theory X. Likewise, you would go back and edit the posts with a line saying that the review is now available and link over to the review.
The benefit of doing this is that since there will no doubt be a bit of a lull between the posts being made and the page being made, the posts will already be indexed. Therefore, when you interlink them, you’re getting a backlink from a long standing and indexed page.
Another great benefit is that it’s a highly relevant link and Google loves some good old interlinking. Of course, when it comes to monetisation methods, Amazon is your friend on this one. You could of course just straight out link to the Blu Ray, but also on what TV is best to watch it on etc. The possibilities of this are endless. Just be careful if you’re linking out to equipment since it can be a bit of an issue. I.e. if you’re linking a theory post (in the example above) to a review about a TV or Blu Ray player, this wouldn’t look natural. However, if you linked a movie review out to a review on a TV or Blu Ray player and mentioned that the film was watched on these devices, this would be a much more natural way to link the two together.
You would then of course in the TV review link back to the Last Jedi Review, as well as any other movie review on your site.
I’ve seen it countless times on competitor sites where they just randomly link items together that have no relevance at all and this has little to no effect in terms of helping your site.
When it comes to choosing a theme, I’d always recommend that you use a paid for theme. There’s one that I use on more than one site. The reason for this is that you get a 5 site license, and because the niches are so different, there’s not any chance of a footprint between the two, especially since I’m not interlinking them.When it comes to a paid theme, you have full control over the customisation of the theme. In the one that I use, it also has a built in rating system which shows up as stars in the Google snippet. It's also optimised for Google in terms of Page Speed, which will be extremely helpful in the coming months with the mobile index.
I’ll also add if you’re using Amazon Associates, then you invest in a plugin to manage the products. There’s a few out there, but steer clear of the free Amazon Associates plugin, it’s really awful.
I won’t be sharing the theme that I’m using, nor the plugin on this thread for two reasons.
1) This isn’t a sales thread for both items, and I don’t want this post to look as though I’m bigging up these products, especially when they're not sold on here.
2) This is a blackhat forum and I think by and large the customers of both the theme and the plugin won’t be in the blackhat scene. I’m not sure how well either company would take to knowing that their products are being splattered across this site.
If you want to know about either of them, PM me, but I’d ask that you don’t randomly share this back on the thread. I had dropped the name of another company on a site of mine and hinted at the fact that there were blackhat activities going on and they asked me to remove any mention of their products from public view. I can only imagine what these other two companies would say if they were plastered all over this fine forum.
Anyway, I hope that this has helped some people that are wondering about interlinking on their site and how to do it properly. It won’t be suitable for every niche, but as mentioned it should be applicable to quite a few of them. I’m sure there’s something I’ll have missed in my haste of posting this, so please feel free to add in any questions below.
