Is there a benefit to having them linked together vs not? Assume everything else is the same, all the social bookmark stuff is still in place, the only difference is linking the first level web 2.0 sites together vs not linking them together.

Does linking them have any known advantage?

I dont think Google likes web 2.0 link wheel anymore so maybe not interlinking them would be a better strategy

As I know that you can give it a try with some sites so that you can see the results because maybe nobody here tries this yet. :) But if I was you, I would do that to test :D

The whole concept of link wheeling was to get the flow of link juice towards the main website by linking article together.

If you are not linking them together and putting backlinks in the article instead, that would give you equal benefit.

Does linking them together help the individual properties get indexed?

getting link juice vs. leaving a footprint

you decide
