Hi,

I have a site that was hit by the Penguin algo change and decided that it was time to try to get to the bottom of what had caused the penalty and what I could do to recover from it. The other main driving factor was that I wanted to ensure that I didn't make the same mistakes again.

The best resources I found for explaining what caused the penalty was this http://searchengineland.com/study-g...thm-triggered-by-fewer-links-over-time-152213.

After doing some analysis with Majestics site explorer I decided that it was lack of anchor text diversity combined with a poor backlink strategy (over 50% of the backlinks were targeting just three pages on the site).

Next I looked at what could be done to rectify the situation, this was a great article to help with that http://seofen.com/google-penalty-step-by-step-recovery-tips/.

Removing offending backlinks is not an option as most were created using services bought on BHW so my strategy is going to be to get lots more backlinks with a greater anchor text diversity and dilute the affect of the existing links.

This should be a lesson to anyone planning their backlinking strategy and also to service providers on BHW, from what I can see it is critical that no more than 40% of the anchor text targets the keywords on a site the rest should be generic anchor text, also link diversity should be taken in to account in regards to where the backlinks are coming from.

I know there isn't anything particularly new here but it may be helpful to some of you.

Gone are the days when you could spam a site to death and expect to get decent SERPS, a clear strategy needs to be put in place and most importantly you need to keep track of your overall campaign. This is where I went wrong with the site that got hit, I lost track of exactly what I had done with it, I was buying services on BHW and thinking that everything combined was improving the sites ranking when behind the scenes some of what I was doing was actually slowly killing the site.

In future I will be using services that can provide good link & anchor text diversification and will probably restrict my keyword anchors to no more than 20% of the total.

Interestingly although the site was hit the blog which carries numerous articles & press releases relating to the sites products was not and still maintains page one positions for many of the keywords, at least that has helped maintain most of the traffic.

Over the next few months I will be working to recover this site by diluting the current keyword focused backlinks down to around 30% and hopefully it will be back to its former page 1 position. I will be logging everything I do so I will be able to see what works and what doesn't and will update here when I have something interesting that has happened.

I'm sure this thread will become a good refference for people who suffered by Penguin Updates.
You seem to know what you're doing and you done a great job investigateing some of the aspects that got you penalized.
It will be more interesting if you update us with some ranking statistics, your off-page seo plan, some keywords competition levels and maybe your current number of backlinks?
Also,I guess you know already that is often more expansive to recover a site insteed of promoting a new one.
Of course, branding and other stuff are involved aswell.

Generic terms is a myth, diversifying your anchor using your brand/domain name, naked URL and main keywords is the key. The problem with this is, a lot of people find it difficult to keep track with the percentage and end up overdoing it which leads to a penalty.

By Generic I mean brand, url, domain, click here, take a look, etc.

The site only has around 1400 backlinks. This is a company website which is focused on quite a niche product, there are only three other companies that sell the same product under different brands. I appreciate that we could move the site to a new domain but I think it is worthwhile attempting a recover test. I do have three other sites covering this niche as well and all of them occupy page 1 of all the major search engines.

Only thing I'm not sure about is if it is even possible or if its a case of once the mighty G considers the site to be ranked artificially and penalises it that's the end with no reconsideration. I doubt it though, I'm sure that G has a rejig on penalised sites from time to time.

Have you tried spamming your website even more but with random anchor text and reaching a diversification above 90%?

Try it :)

Anchor text diversity became one of the more important factors, but it is not the only one. I suggest considering diversifying the type of sites where your links come from as well (so not all your links are from Wordpress blogs or web 2.0 sites, blog comments, etc.)

30 do-follow Web 2.0 with all pages unique contents then point to the manually blog comments, awazing output results for new site...

Hi, letterman!

I received your pingback today, thanks! I am happy that you found my article helpful and that you decided to recommend it to other people too. The truth is that Penguin related penalties are way too difficult to recover from and it's not always possible to just diversify your anchor texts. It's a must, yes, but sadly it's not always good enough. There comes a time when you will have to remove some of the bad backlinks as difficult as it may seem. I have dealt with such cases in my SEO carrier and I have written two articles devoted to this particular thing - link removal tools.

Here are the 2 articles:
enter my seofen domain name before this: /4-mandatory-tools-for-link-removal-after-google-penalty/ - 4 great link link removal tools
enter my seofen domain name before this: /google-disavow-tool-how-to-lift-a-google-penalty/ - ways to remove links with the help of the disavow tool and 3 other tools.

I hope you will find them useful too and they will help you in your struggle against these issues.

No problem, mate. Sorry that I can't post live links, it seems that I have to make a donation in order to do this :) But you read my posts, which is what matters. Cheers!
Hey thanks for the links to the other two posts. Useful.

You have to get a certain post count before you can post links, its just to stop people registering and spamming.

Thanks for the explanation! Do you happen to know what number of posts should I write in order to be able to post live links? Thanks!

John1444 is spot on about generic anchors. If you're recovering from penguin use ahrefs or majestic and pay very close attention to new found links and their profile e.g citation and trust. Most will not have trust, obviously as they are new but the citation of a good link is 15-20.If you have - - (no citation or trust, using majestic) coming in you have problems.Anything under 9 citation is poor,10-14 pretty good,15+ yeah I'll take those. The problem is poor links you built last year can actually just appear indexed now or even later. It takes time to build quality but it is worth it.
If you have 10-14 citation links, power them up,the 16+'s will respond well to backlinking to create some pr which in turn gives a boost when pr changes.

Spam works, and works well,if done right. You need to use it in a clever manner, but those days are far from gone.

Try and post on sites where the homepage is at least pr4,I know the pages have no pr but they will respond better, low or no pr homepages are worthless in all counts unkess the site is new and is getting quality content and links added on a regular basis.I expect the new penguin update to use at least some of the disavow tool data.I also expect it to take into account metrics such as homepage pr and trust(for which is partly responsible for pr).
