    Hi BHW!

I have an interesting scenario which I am pondering over. If I had a directory site which was receiving, let's say 90,000 unique visitors per month and I placed an ad on this site linking to a store which sold products relative to the theme of the directory. ...now let's say 2%[1800 unique visitors] of the visitors to the directory site actually clicked on this ad... what percentage of that 2% would be converted into a sale?

...I honestly to know how this would work... would it be 2% of the 2%?

with any project you don't know till you try

I'm played in the directory business before. Didn't take for me personally, so I probably left some money on the table, but it was more work than I thought it would be from looking at the figures initially.

usually directory traffic is bad traffic IMHO - lots of auto submits, bots etc.

geographically mostly philippines / india / china. When you get a live person, 95% of the time it's a guy in an SEO factory somewhere in asia.

more like 0.1% CTR and 0.1% of those sales, so maybe 1 or 2 sales a year

that's my personal experience for a "generic" directory advertising a clickbank IM type product. If you have "niche specific" ACTUAL traffic coming through, could be better but who knows.

the other place you can potentially monetize is by building a list for selling SEO / IM related products. Could likely squeeze a few more sales out of it that way.

I'm fairly sure it's niche specific traffic... my bounce rate is around average [around 55%] ...I believe that the traffic is actually interested in my directory.. in fact I have gone from less than 100 hits per day to gradually reaching 1000 hits today in 17 days... and this increase was consistent... one day 100 hits, the next 135, the next 250 so on and so forth.

100-500 hits a day was normal for my experience with a generic directory not doing much more than posting it on a few IM forums

bounce rate is with directories generally ok because with all the auto submit programs they have to navigate through the submit fields and that reduces teh bounce %

what % of your traffic is western europe / north american?

if you own the site, try it out - every experience is different and mine's just my personal data

if you don't and you're thinking of buying it, buyer beware...

Well from everything I have looked at [google analytics/Alexa] ..North America is bringing in around 90% of the traffic, and I also know that much of my traffic reaches my page organically through google.. and the searches are VERY specific. I believe that these searches increase my bounce rate, being that they visitor sees the info they need to see and then leave the site.

    that's decent

all my perspective is from ending up with heavy india / philippines traffic.

    give it a try.

Let get the minimum . I believe will be cut off another 10% - 20% of the 2% will be convert to sales.

Unless you do more work and information and call to action to convert it to sales. Because directories mostly earn money from ads rather than sales.

Let me get this right. Are you saying that 10-20% of the initial 2% will convert into sales? So, around 180 to 360 [or 270 avg] sales?
