had a Q & A session with one of the higher ups at the security department at eBay. Confirmed that eBay is aware of stealth accounts but basically said eBay can only react when a stealther screws up, and eBay does not actively hunt and shut down stealth accounts, even though it had the capability to do so if it wished. Said it was a million to one shot that a stealth account will be shut down unless he did something stupid to out himself.

Interesting chat there, but I kinda expected them to say that. They can't possibly track down 500 million simulatenous accounts. And 99% of online security works driven by abuse reports, not by proactive work. It's so much cheaper and simpler to just let users complain.

For example: nobody caught more spam and gave Google more free spam reports than SEOs themselves. Snitches would simply give away all the jewels. Matt Cutts would simply roam forums waiting to gather free work.

Now go to shitmasterworld and read all those threads full of complaints...I love reading that forum's decadence! Most the geniuses there complaining about "unfair SEO" were technique snitches back in the day.

Fun fact: if you Google "shitmasterworld" several BHW threads show up. I find that, along with the content of those threads, hilarious.

OP, remember eBay is a business. Those stealth accounts are still making them money. If they went through and weeded out all of the stealth accounts, how much money do you think they would lose?

They will turn a blind eye so long as it directly benefits them.

They know about them. They profit more with them, than going against them.
