I have this problem where I'm trying to rank my homepage in the SERPs however, one of the pages is ranking for that term. The problem is, I have already thrown links to my homepage. Is my home page penalized?

Make sure your homepage is not a nofollow link.

May be it required more quality work for your homepage. Generate more quality links hope you could get rank your homepage.

Make sure the homepage is not over-optimized for the desired KW, it's a common mistake.

Increase the number of internal links with your desired keyword as anchor text to point to your homepage.

or simply 301 the page to your homepage.

Reduce the keyword optimisation of the internal page ranking above your home page. You are optimising your homepage and that page for the same keywords that's why it's ranking above your homepage.

I second this!

Check keywords in title, headings, content, alt tags (of images) etc and the overall keyword density to start with to reduce over optimisation. Don't forget to check how many anchored links you have poiting to the HP. Too many will penalise you too...

Make sure the homepage is not over-optimized for the desired KW, it's a common mistake.

The fact is I thought the home page was under optimized since it only had one keyword in the body and the title.

I'll try doing some of your suggestions and also use a nofollow, noindex tag on the internal page since that is just a lead capture form for a funnel.

In the body of the internal page that's ranking, link with the exact match anchor to the homepage.

Change the title of the homepage to: Brand Name: Keyword and Similar Keyword

Change the inner page keyword to a semanticly similar keyword that isn't the exact match.
